Grill Your Own Wagyu in Kaimuki
Stepping into Yakiniku Hiromi-ya feels less like a formal restaurant visit and more like being invited to a local chef's personal kitchen. Located in the heart of Kaimuki, this neighborhood gem is where Honolulu residents go when they want high-quality Japanese barbecue without the pretense of high-end Waikiki dining.
The Art of the Open Flame
The centerpiece of every table is the glowing tabletop charcoal grill. As you order rounds of kalbi, harami (skirt steak), and marbled wagyu, the air fills with the savory, charred scent of rendered fat hitting hot coals. The beef is sliced with surgical precision, ensuring it hits the perfect level of caramelization within seconds of touching the metal grates. Don't overlook the side dishes; the kimchi has a sharp, fermented tang that cuts through the richness of the meat, while the spicy cold tofu provides a cooling contrast between rounds of grilling.
A Kaimuki Original
The space is intentionally compact, which makes for a boisterous, energetic atmosphere where the sound of sizzling meat often competes with lively chatter. Be prepared for a cozy squeeze—if you're sitting near the kitchen or the entrance, you'll feel the heat of the grill and the rapid-fire energy of the staff. It’s an ideal spot for a group of friends who don't mind a little elbow-to-elbow dining in exchange for some of the most consistent BBQ in Oahu. Because the seating is limited, the room fills up quickly, creating a high-energy hum that persists throughout the evening. Whether you are a local regular or just navigating the culinary landscape of Honolulu, Hiromi-ya offers a grounded, no-frills experience that prioritizes the quality of the beef above all else.

Great value! They had 3 tiers and we had the middle one. For two of us, it was enough to go with it. Around $60 pp, you can order 3 of the same plates pp of wagyu, and there are unlimited items as well. Most of the meat was cut super thin for japanese standard, but everything was delicious. I love horumon so it was nice that they carry quality horumon. Their meat poke (rice with raw thin sliced meat and yakiniku sauce over it) was delicious too. I wish they had more sauce option or a lettuce to wrap meat to change some flavors. They offer sesame oil with salt for an additional $1. Overall, I thought it was a great value! It is a japanese yakiniku so you will have more fatty type of meat. If you like it, you should try!

I was planning to take my valued clients to Yoshi, our usual go-to for good quality Japanese BBQ, but since it was fully booked, I found Hiromi-ya on OpenTable. It said “All You Can Eat Japanese Wagyu,” which sounded great, so we decided to give it a try. When we arrived, the restaurant was almost empty — I thought maybe because of parking, but soon realized there’s a reason for that. First, the “All You Can Eat” advertisement is misleading. It’s not truly all you can eat — the portions are limited. I can understand that since it’s Japanese Wagyu, but at least be clear about it. What really ruined the experience was the service. Throughout our meal, the waitress came over at least 5–6 times to warn us that “you’ll be charged if you don’t finish your food.” We kept explaining that we were still eating — we were talking and taking our time — but she just kept coming back with the same reminder, in a tone that honestly felt like she was trying to rush us out. The restaurant wasn’t even busy — only three tables were occupied — yet we felt constant pressure to hurry up and leave. As someone who also works in the restaurant business, I completely understand not wanting food waste, but this was beyond reasonable. It was rude, uncomfortable, and completely ruined what was supposed to be a nice dinner. I rarely write bad reviews, but this experience was truly disappointing. Please train your staff better and learn how to respect your guests’ dining pace.

I am not one to leave reviews, but my friend and I had such a negative experience here that I feel obligated to leave one. We had a dinner reservation and our server was very polite, however, the portion sizes were quite small for the price. Even still, we wanted to have a nice dinner and order everything we wanted to try. There were two servers working, and although they were polite, we were rarely checked on. We were ordering yakiniku items and when we requested to change the grill, they said they don't do that and instead just put ice on the grill to "clean it." After finishing our food, we had sat there for a good twenty minutes without being asked if we wanted our check. There were only 3 other tables and when we looked around, the two servers were standing in the back area talking. My friend had to flag down the server to ask for the check, after which they quickly brought it out so we paid and left. The entire experience was very mid and underwhelming, but my main concern is that the restaurant called my friend (who gave her number for the reservation) after we left to ask us if we could come back because we didn't leave enough tip. What kind of restaurant calls their customers to hustle them for more tip? It was very unprofessional and we both have never experienced anything like this. My friend felt a lot of pressure and anxiety, and because of this, we will never be returning.

The spacious restaurant offers a relaxed atmosphere where you can dine without feeling cramped by neighboring tables. The simple yet elegant interior creates a comfortable environment perfect for unwinding. The wagyu yukhoe was exceptional - fresh, premium-quality beef without any gamey taste. From the day's specials, the Uwa Misuji offered a lean yet tender cut with a clean, delicate flavor showcasing the high-grade wagyu quality. My wife tried the Geta Kalbi, a succulent cut near the bone with rich, juicy flavors. Both cuts are rare delicacies available in limited quantities per cow, reflecting the restaurant's commitment to premium selections. At Hiromi Ya, you can also experience authentic Japanese flavors in Hawaii through their exceptional rice quality. The Rice is imported directly from Japan and mill it locally in Hawaii, preserving its freshness and achieving the perfect sticky texture. The rice's premium quality matches what you'd find in Japan, creating an ideal pairing with their wagyu beef for a truly remarkable dining experience. The friendly female staff provided detailed explanations about each cut, enhancing our knowledge of the meat. The BYOB option allowed us to bring our preferred beer pairing while saving on costs, enabling us to explore more meat varieties. The Tongu, Harami, and Hormone were all exceptionally fresh and high-quality. Every dish demonstrated the restaurant's dedication to excellence.

Dining at Hiromi-ya comes with a time limit—officially 90 minutes, but it felt closer to 60 minutes, so keep an eye on the clock if you plan to take your time. Service was fast, attentive, and friendly. Just a heads-up: when dining in a group, the staff prefers that only one person communicates with the servers to avoid confusion—they aren’t fans of multiple people placing or changing orders. The atmosphere is simple and straightforward. Seating lines the sides with a central walkway leading to the tables. The space accommodates both couples and groups comfortably, but I recommend making reservations in advance—otherwise, you’ll have to wait. For about $59 per person, you get to order three items each. We enjoyed plenty of kalbi, rosu, premium kalbi, Hiromi beef, pork belly, and chicken. The premium kalbi and Hiromi beef were particularly outstanding—tender, flavorful, and worth every bite. Also I think the beef are all wagyu but dont know what A type is provided. On the side, the yakiniku rice, curry rice, and fresh cabbage were also delicious. Hiromi-ya makes a great dinner spot for special occasions or family gatherings. Plus, seniors and children (within a certain age range) get a discount, which is a nice bonus.
