A Slice of Tokyo in the Heart of Waikiki

Stepping into this subterranean corridor in Honolulu feels like an immediate departure from the tropical humidity of the Pacific. Modeled after the tight, bustling alleyways of Japan, this food hall brings a raw, kinetic energy to the local dining scene. You will hear the rhythmic clatter of ceramics and the focused shouting of chefs over the hiss of steaming ramen broth, creating an auditory landscape that mimics a busy evening in Shinjuku.

Culinary Staples and Street Food Roots

The space is built around the concept of yokocho—narrow lanes dedicated to izakayas and noodle shops. You aren't here for white-tablecloth service; you are here for deep, umami-rich bowls of tonkotsu ramen or crispy, golden-brown gyoza that disappear the moment they hit the counter. The menu offerings lean heavily into regional Japanese comfort food, emphasizing high-quality dashi and perfectly charred yakitori skewers. The scent of toasted sesame oil and garlic hangs heavy in the air, acting as a siren song for anyone navigating the basement level.

The Local Pace

Because the layout mimics traditional cramped Japanese eateries, seating is inherently intimate—sometimes bordering on shoulder-to-shoulder. It is a fantastic spot for solo travelers or small groups who prefer a casual, high-velocity dinner over a drawn-out affair. While the underground location keeps the environment cool, keep in mind that the acoustics can get quite lively during peak dinner hours, so it is better suited for animated conversation than quiet reflection. If you are exploring the Waikiki commercial district and want a focused, no-nonsense meal that prioritizes speed and depth of flavor, this remains a go-to destination for authentic Japanese street eats.

There's plenty of food options to choose from, although majority of them are noodles if you're into that. Although there are sushi, korean foods, ice cream, and sweet drinks. Plenty of other good stuff. Going to another door on the same floor, I believe there's a small market though we didn't go in. And last I went there's also a good shave ice further in, pretty good.

Very cool place with a "mall" of different Japanese type restaurants. Lots of choices and pretty good food. It felt almost authentic to japan. The ramen was okay, but not like I'm used to in Japan. The broth was good, but the noodles were thin. Good amount though!

What a found. Stumbling in this place don’t know what it was and wow, I’m glad I did. I tried the matcha ice cream and it was so good. Too bad that my husband wanted to eat something else, otherwise I would have tried the food too. Until we meet next time…

All of the restaurants in Stix Asia I recommend to anyone interested in Asian foods. their services and the food qualities were very good. I’m from Japan and I know what’s good. Kiki, tempura serves tempura as they fry and quantity is just right. Service is Japanese style, polite and kind. Shingen: soba & izakaya has decent Seiro soba and good choices of soba dishes. Baikoken: ramens are authentic Hokkaido ramen. ***The best thing I experienced was this location wasn’t too crowded every time we went. You’ll get a table easily. It’s hidden gems of Japanese restaurants in Waikiki. We ate there last year and went back again this year. Really recommended!

This is a hidden gem for great food right on the main strip. Good selection, good quality, quiet, no wait, lots of space for family with kids. We tried 5 different stalls and we enjoyed everything we ordered. Highly recommend

Great blue fin tuna.. generally the whole food complex at the level -1 floor at Waikiki shopping complex is filled with good quality restaurants serving Japanese or Korean food. This one is no exception. Service was great and environment is similar to what you will find in a Tokyo corner sushi place.

So many dining options to choose from! With over a dozen of Asian (mostly Japanese) restaurants, your family can choose from any place and eat together. Some of the restaurants do not allow you to bring food or drinks fun a neighboring restaurant. The bathroom code is printed on your receipts. There is a connected parking garage that you can validate from one of the restaurants, if you park nearby they will not validates for other parking garages.

Kyoto Katsuda - so good that we went twice! We ordered the wagyu and the cheapest beef option as a side. The cheaper beef option was very juicy and tender. Wagyu was also good but meatier. It comes with curry sauce, tempura sauce, and a DIY sesame seed sauce. Free cabbage and rice refill. The second time we came we ordered the cheapest beef option again and the second beef option on the menu. Both were very good! Service is good too. I wish they had more customers!!
