An Unpretentious Slice of Honolulu Life

Stepping into Waikiki Beachside Kitchen feels less like a tourist excursion and more like slipping into a local rhythm. Located steps away from the iconic shoreline, this spot captures the breezy, salt-air essence of Honolulu without the pretension of high-end resort dining. You will hear the distant hum of surfers talking story and the rhythmic clinking of flatware against ceramic plates, punctuated by the occasional gust of wind rattling the outdoor patio slats.

The Menu: Island Comforts

The culinary focus here centers on approachable comfort food that leans heavily into regional favorites. The Loco Moco is a standout, featuring a dense, savory patty blanketed in a rich, dark gravy that hits all the right umami notes, paired with a sunnyside-up egg that breaks perfectly over steamed white rice. It is the kind of dish designed to fuel a long afternoon in the Pacific sun. For those seeking lighter fare, their fresh catch selections highlight the bounty of local Hawaiian waters, prepared simply to let the natural sweetness of the fish shine through.

A Local Quirk

Be prepared for the pace to be distinctly relaxed. If you are in a rush to catch a catamaran cruise, you might find the laid-back service speed a minor hurdle; this is a place meant for people who have nowhere else to be. The seating can get a bit intimate during peak lunch hours, making it an ideal spot for solo travelers to strike up a conversation with a resident or for couples looking for an unhurried, casual bite amidst the vibrant energy of the Waikiki district.

Who Should Visit?

This kitchen is best suited for beachgoers, hungry travelers wandering off the sand, and anyone who prefers their meals with a side of ocean breeze. It is a no-frills, honest dining experience that reflects the genuine, hospitable spirit of Hawaii.

We decided to go to this small diner for dinner based on good reviews on google & yelp. It turns out to be a great disappointment. There’s only one girl who did everything from handling payment to making dishes. We ordered a sloppy rice and a veggie curry. Sloppy rice is really sloppy, basically minced meat in pasta sauce, four tiny sausages, and an egg. I feel most of my meals on international flights are better... veggie curry is even worse. We saw the girl taking out a bag of frozen vegetable and poured it into a source pan with water and curry powder... now I really regret that I didn’t buy a 5-buck sandwich from a nearby abc convenience store. I don’t know how others gave 4/5 stars. Maybe the diner has changed over the years. Maybe breakfast / burgers are better. But definitely avoid their plates.

!!!Cash Only!!! Just to start, I went thru the reviews, to see if it is CASH ONLY, and I can confirm it is, but none of the other reviews mention this. Miles cooked my breakfast, and I actually ate there. The atmosphere is as you would expect, basically a kitchen with a counter, and a small area to wait / eat. If you are driving here, don't expect to find parking close by, but definitely don't let that deter, you it's Waikiki, not a big deal to go for a little walk. My meal was $5, I can tell you getting a meal for $5, much less a good meal, in Waikiki is un heard of. I have posted a picture of the current menu, so you can see the current prices. Also Miles was about to make a new pot of coffee, so instead of just throwing out what was left in the pot, he gave me a free cup of coffee as well. Highly recommend this place!

Quaint little shop tucked away in an alleyway, managed by a single chef. Serves fresh hot food at extraordinarily fair and cheap prices. $5 for two eggs, spam, rice and sausage is an amazing steal compared to the stuff around Waikiki. The owner is also very kind, letting you know how much you'll need to wait as there's only one chef and one kitchen. He also charged us $1 less when we asked for only one egg, making sure the prices were consistent. Really great with all kinds of condiments to compliment your breakfast
