A Crunch That Defines Nuuanu
Finding a reliable spot for authentic Korean fried chicken in the heart of Downtown Honolulu usually leads locals straight to the corner of Nuuanu Avenue. Vons Chicken has built its reputation on a rigorous double-frying technique that renders the skin shatteringly crisp while keeping the meat underneath remarkably juicy. The air inside carries the heavy, savory scent of garlic and soy, mingling with the subtle heat of gochujang chili.
The Menu Experience
The star of the show here is undoubtedly the original crispy skin, though the seasoned varieties—specifically the Hot & Spicy and the Honey Butter—provide a robust contrast for those who prefer a sticky, flavor-forward glaze. Unlike mass-market chains, the portions here are built for sharing, making it a go-to for office workers grabbing a late lunch or groups heading home after a Pau Hana session.
Practical Details for Honolulu Diners
While the flavors are top-tier, be prepared for a utilitarian dining environment. The space is efficient and functional rather than decorative, designed for quick turnover. Parking in this part of Honolulu can be a tight squeeze, so if you are driving into the Nuuanu district, patience is required. Whether you are looking for a takeaway box to enjoy at the waterfront or a quick sit-down meal amidst the urban bustle, this spot delivers a high-impact flavor profile that stays true to the tradition of Korean poultry mastery.

Vons Chicken on Halekauwila has become one of my go-to spots for a fast and satisfying lunch. Their bentos are exactly what you want on a busy workday — delicious, generous portions, and reasonably priced. I picked up the spicy pork bento today, and everything in the box was on point. The pork was flavorful with just the right amount of heat, the sides were fresh and tasty and the rice was cooked perfectly. For the price, the variety you get is honestly hard to beat.

I highly recommend Vons Chicken! We ordered several flavors for Thanksgiving, and everything was delicious. I love spicy food, so the Spicy and Garlic flavors were my favorites. My husband enjoyed the Classic Fried and Soy Garlic the most. The owner was incredibly kind, and the restaurant was very clean, so we had a great impression when we visited. If you’re craving good Korean fried chicken, definitely give Bon’s Chicken a try! You won’t be disappointed.

I used to visit the Vons on Pensacola street...this Korean Fried Chicken (kfc) shop is one of the originals in hawaii. Meaning before the Korean chicken popularity came to hawaii...they were one of the first. Since I was nearby I decided to visit this location. Menu is slightly different, ex #4 was boneless chicken and fries. The other location only had boneless chicken plates. Anyways, got #4 with shoyu boneless chicken, it's my favorite. I have friends that enjoy the bone in chickens. It's up to you. The shop is small, I'm assuming during the week most will buy to-go. What's interesting is they have a restaurant in restaurant. Apparently a small sign on the side says J & J with a menu of 5 plates for $10.99 to $15.99. Regardless, service was nice and friendly. No issues while I ordered and wait.
