Flavor Meets Convenience in Kaimuki

Walking into Up Roll Café Hawaii, the first thing you notice is the rhythmic chopping of fresh fish and the vibrant colors of crisp vegetables lining the counter. Located in the heart of Honolulu's bustling Kaimuki district, this spot has redefined the local approach to the sushi burrito. It is a no-frills, counter-service environment where efficiency meets high-quality ingredients, making it a go-to for professionals grabbing a quick lunch or surfers fueling up after a session at Diamond Head.

Customized Rolls and Bowls

The menu centers on the DIY ethos, allowing guests to build their own burritos or bowls. The tuna and salmon arrive with a distinct ocean-fresh snap, while their signature house sauces provide that necessary kick of ginger and soy. Unlike traditional sit-down sushi bars in Oahu, the experience here is designed for speed without sacrificing the integrity of the seafood. You will hear the lively buzz of the kitchen staff and the occasional shuffling of hungry patrons waiting for their numbers to be called.

A Local Favorite for a Reason

While the footprint is compact, the flavor profiles are expansive. Expect the space to get lively during the lunch rush; you might have to navigate a bit of a crowd near the condiment station, but the speed of service keeps the line moving. It is an ideal stop if you find yourself traversing the Waialae Avenue corridor and craving something lighter and healthier than the typical fried comfort food found elsewhere in the city. Just be prepared to grab a napkin—these oversized rolls are packed to the brim and meant to be eaten with both hands.

Decent salmon bowl, but it was okay. Nothing special and the portions were kind of uneven. I think I like the wraps better. All-in-all its a cool concept to have burritos wrap sushis but the bowls dont really do anything anything special for me. Not a lot of salmon, more rice and vegetables than anything. Everything is a bit expensive between $13 and $20 for a bowl or wrap. They appear to have a large keiki menu and juices on the menu. Have yet to try any of those.

Really disappointed with the portion of th poke. The scoop of poke was surprisingly small and they’ll charge extra if you want a more reasonable amount of fish. I paid $18 for what ended up being mostly a bowl of salad. If I wanted a salad, I would have ordered a salad.

Ok, so the hard reality is that Up Roll Café in Honolulu is pretty much my favourite place on the planet, but unfortunately it's a 10 hour flight away. Never has Hawaii felt so far, as when I'm craving one of these stunning sushi burittos. Honestly, this place is THAT good. My friendrecently found Up Roll on Instagram & while in Hawaii last month, we made it our mission in life to walk here. Over the course of 16 nights we ate here 3 times, the last jaunt was in complete despair on our way to the airport. Yep, we both bought an 'Ahi Lovers Roll' to take on the flight home to Sydney. Screw you airplane food! After working my way around the menu a few times, the Ahi Lovers Roll remains my steadfast favourite. I ordered this twice with a decent amount of extras including, avocado, Japanese basil, cilantro, pickles & inari skin which worked to soak up the sesame sauce really nicely. The ordering experience here is unique, much like the food concept which allows you to tailor the roll to your own taste. The menu is designed checklist style & allows you to choose additional extras to add to your desired roll. Possible options include a roll or a bowl, type of rice/quinoa, sauce & toppings. The combinations are endless. There's genuinely not enough ridiculously wonderful things I can say about this place, just thinking about it makes me hungry & fills my heart with a longing that only a great ocean can create by its divide. ... Hell, next time we're both buying t-shirts from these guys so we can let our inner 'Up Roll Groupie' flags fly!

Vegan Options! We got the vegan inari in a burrito. They had 3 sauces that were vegan - an onion dressing, green sriracha and a white tabasco. They said the green sriracha and white tabasco were spicy, but I didn't feel that way. The white tabasco was delicious. Would def recommend, split it with my boyfriend and was very filling!

Discovered this place on a trip to Hawaii this week. Ended up going back again on the way home to the airport. The rolls are PHENOMENAL! (The shirts they sell are cool too) I had the spicy Ahi with spicy mayo. Pure deliciousness! Looking forward to my next trip out there!

January 2024: Ordered an ahi avocado 🥑 roll with white rice. Sauces were the spicy mayo and the sesame miso. Everything was very tasty. I thought there was a good amount of ahi and avocado 🥑. I tried the yuzu soda which came with jelly. The drink hit the spot. I would definitely come back again for more sushi rolls.

Walked in and was immediately greeted with a kind welcome by the women working there. They cheerfully explained how to fill out the order menu and bring it to the register when completed. The food was prepared in reasonable time and tasted amazing. I ordered the sexy salmon bowl and highly recommend it. The staff seemed to enjoy working together which made the atmosphere more positive as well. Can’t wait to go back to try something else. The location was also great as I was making my way to the street art murals, which you should definitely check out in the Kakaako neighborhood!
