Late Night Flavors in Kapahulu

When the sun dips behind the Diamond Head ridge, Uncle Bo’s transforms into the unofficial living room for Honolulu locals. Located right in the heart of the Kapahulu corridor, this isn't your typical polished tourist spot. It feels like a neighborhood house party that never ends, fueled by the steady clinking of glass and a soundtrack of chatter that often borders on raucous.

The Pupu Obsession

The kitchen leans heavily into island-style comfort food designed for sharing. Their Boiler—a chaotic, delicious mix of shrimp, clams, mussels, and Andouille sausage bathed in a spicy, garlic-heavy butter sauce—is the reason people squeeze into the dimly lit booths. If you manage to grab a seat, look out for the Big Bo’s Fried Rice, which arrives at the table steaming with a distinct smoky depth that sets it apart from standard versions found elsewhere in Oahu. Expect the space to be loud and the energy to be high; it’s part of the charm.

What to Expect on Your Visit

Parking in this slice of Honolulu is notoriously tight, so plan to circle the block or walk from the nearby residential streets. Once inside, you’re greeted by warm, amber lighting and an eclectic collection of decor that makes the room feel lived-in rather than designed. It’s an ideal spot for a group of friends looking to burn the candle at both ends after a long day of surfing or hiking. Just a warning: the air is thick with the scent of garlic and blackened seasoning, and you will likely leave with your clothes smelling faintly of their signature sauces—a small price to pay for some of the most consistent pupus in the city.

Best burger I've hall my entire trip option of fries or veggies with it. Has a gluten free menu which was also satisfying for those in our party. Highly recommend this place. We also had an appy of artichoke dip during 1/2 price happy hour (until 6:00pm) which was also very good. Boss pizza was good too.

Went here to dine-in because my dad liked the clam chowder we ordered the first time on Uber Eats. However, our second time trying this place was overall okay. We ordered the New England clam chowder, garlic rib eye steak, and uncle Bo’s seafood pasta. Clam chowder - first time from Uber Eats was pretty good, but the second time we ordered for dine-in was salty Garlic rib eye steak - it was good but not like amazing. Portion was huge. The meat was tender and juicey . The sauce that came with it barely did anything to enhance the flavor it was quite bland. Comes with choice of rice, mashed potatoes, or thick cut fries and steamed assorted vegetables on the side. Uncle Bo’s seafood pasta - it was a big plate, but I think this dish was the least favorite above the two. It’s a creamy tomato sauce base, and it was very bland. Servers were nice and friendly. Our food came out pretty quick once our order were placed. We got lucky with street parking, but there’s paid parking across the street.

The steamed clams were really good and the fish of the day was very yummy! Love going to places of the beaten path. Well worth the 23 min walk from where we were staying! Drinks were great too!!

The positive reviews about this restaurant are not hyperbole. We were told about this place by our Uber driver, and had to come try it. Behind the very unassuming storefront, the interior feels loungy and a bit like a jazz club. The food was a standout for our trip to Waikiki, intensely flavorful and umami rich, casual fare but well executed, even with something as simple as their Greasy Noodles. Service was fast. Near the bathroom is a wall of fame, showing pictures of the owner with various celebrities including Barack Obama and Mike The Situation, which is not surprising given the quality of the food. I also spotted their other restaurant in Haleiwa should you be visiting North Shore. I would go back in a heartbeat and can highly recommend.

I am allergic to onions and garlic and the chef made me the best burger that words could not describe. Cooked medium with the right aunt of juice and toppings. No need for condiments. Chef was willing to make other dishes to accommodate my allergies but I chose something simple. The fries were thick and big. The atmosphere was great and the attention to detail was impeccable. It was my first night in Honolulu in 29! Years and this restaurant deserves this 5 star rating. Exceptional and very affordable.

This is one of our favorite restaurants that we can’t miss every time we visit Hawaii. It’s about 30 min walk from Waikiki and 100% worthwhile. The food is amazing and the service is great. They also have a happy hour between 4pm and 6pm, so that is the time to take advantage of their great deals while saving a bit of money. This is for sure one of the local places that you must try, 100% recommended!

Loved this hole-in-the-wall restaurant. We planned to take advantage of their happy hour menu so arrived at 16:00 when it first opened. Not surprisingly, place was stuffy for 10 minutes but after that the AC was running on full blast and we were ready to eat. Ordered five dishes to try and we finished them all! They're that good!! Our bartender/server Jon was one of the best. He was attentive, patient, and listened to our request. Husband enjoyed the HI FIVE Jon made so much that he almost ordered a second one but it was time for us to leave for our next event. If you're in this area, definitely tried Uncle Bo's happy hour menu. Highly recommend.

OMG!!! Let me tell you! The food and cocktails here are fantastic!! I had the Mango Maui cocktail! It was delicious and the prices were unbelievable! I have not had a cocktail this good this cheap!!!! Plus I had the dynamite shrimp and it was on point!!! My entree was the grilled salmon, the salmon flavor was so delicous! The only issue was it was cooked about 3 minutes too long, a little dry in the middle. The food was priced on point. Not expensive as you would expect. The young man that was my waiter was very kind and a gentleman always checking on me. The outside looks like a strip center type of place so it looks like a dive but inside is beautiful!! Very nice place that is well worth the drive! Its 4 minutes west side of Waikiki.

I love visiting local restaurants when traveling. Uncle Bo's popped up in a search for dinner near Waikiki. From our hotel, which was a few blocks from the beach, we had about a 15 minute walk. Not terrible by any means, and the walk was safe, well lit and there were sidewalks. From the outside, Uncle Bo's doesn't appear to be the nicest of places, but looks can be deceiving. When we walked in to the restaurant, we were surprised to see a lovely establishment. Kind of gave me speakeasy or high end supper club vibes. I made a reservation ahead of time, which is what I always recommend whenever traveling. We were seated right on time. The staff were friendly and attentive. The menu is very diverse, plenty of options. We ordered the Spinach Dip to start and the Chicken Alfredo and Crab Salad for entrees. All of the dishes were excellent. I would say some of the menu items the prices can be quite steep, but we for sure had leftovers that we saved for another meal. They also have quite an extensive drink menu. If you are looking for nice local restaurant with a variety of menu options, add this to your list of Honolulu must tries.
