An Izakaya Institution in the Heart of Sheridan

Stepping into Tokkuri Tei is less like entering a restaurant and more like being welcomed into a chaotic, loud, and incredibly delicious inner sanctum of Honolulu dining. Tucked away from the polished resort districts, this Sheridan Street staple has earned its reputation as the neighborhood spot where locals go when they want authentic Japanese comfort food that doesn't feel like it came from a corporate kitchen.

A Menu That Defies Convention

You aren't here for a quiet, white-tablecloth experience. You are here for the energy. The walls are plastered with handwritten menu specials, and the sheer volume of choices can be overwhelming for first-timers. Chef Hideaki Miyoshi has built a legacy here by bridging the gap between traditional izakaya fare and Hawaii’s unique palate. Don't skip the signature tuna tataki or the garlic ahi, which arrive at your table with a sizzle that cuts through the ambient chatter of the room.

Why the Locals Keep Returning

The space feels lived-in, with mismatched wood textures and a hum of conversation that creates a high-energy backdrop for a late-night meal. It is perfect for groups of friends who want to share a dozen small plates—from grilled skewers to fresh sashimi—while debating which sake on the extensive menu pairs best with the karaage. Just a heads-up: parking in this pocket of Honolulu can be a bit of a localized sport, so arrive with some patience or rely on a ride-share.

Whether you're celebrating a weekend milestone or just need a reliable spot for a Tuesday night bowl of udon, this place remains a bedrock of the local culinary scene. It’s raw, honest, and undeniably Tokyo-meets-Oahu in the best possible way.

Fantastic experience! Love their tuna sashimi, so tender and fresh. Their monkfish liver was also impressive which was tender, full of umami flavor and came with sauce and was rich and layered. My friend loved their Ugani Don as well!

Came here at a friend’s recommendation while on break in Oahu. We came on the same day and was able to get a reservation for 10 people. The place is pretty spacious and the kitchen looked huge. Service was great and though we were the first party to arrive, it filled up fairly quickly. The menu is extensive and the food authentic - we had onigiri (well grilled and large), various yakitori, seafood risotto (recommended), hamachi collar (alright), salad and appetizers. Parking is easy with various options around. 3 floor of a building.

Had dinner here. The restaurant wasn't all that busy when we came in, and it's possible to make a reservation. Menu is online through QR code, which unfortunately doesn't have pictures or much descriptions about the food or allergen information. The food quality and quantity was sub par and not worth the high price for them, especially the $21 poke, which only came with 3 pieces. The soft shell crab was rather pitiful with only a salad to really leverage the lack of meat you get. Jaga Batta was also just expensive for the simplicity of the dish of just being a $9 Idaho potato pan fried in butter. Moreover, the udon only had Tempura and tofu with not much vegetables to leverage the overall starchyness of the dish overall. Service was rather slow, we had to prompt the waitress to come and take our order for what felt like over 10 minutes. The kitchen had also forgotten our order of yakiudon, which came last when we just didn't feel the need to eat anymore. Moreover, the waitress didn't even come back to our table in regards to change and getting our receipt,so it is best not to pay in cash. Overall, I wouldn't come here again for the subpar service and food quality that just wasn't tasty enough to leverage everything else wrong with the restaurant. I may not be a local, but I wouldn't recommend locals to dine here either
