A Taste of the Pacific Ocean

Located in the bustling urban landscape of Honolulu, Threadfin Bistro captures the essence of island-to-table dining. This is not a place for white-tablecloth formality; instead, it offers a laid-back, open-air environment where the smell of searing local moi and salty Pacific breezes permeate the dining room. The kitchen focuses heavily on the "threadfin" (moi), a fish historically reserved for Hawaiian royalty, which is prepared here with a modern technical precision that respects traditional ingredients.

The Island Kitchen Workflow

Inside, the noise level picks up during the lunch rush as chefs fire up the pans in an exposed kitchen. You will hear the sharp clatter of stainless steel and the hiss of fresh aromatics hitting hot oil. It is a loud, high-energy spot that feels quintessentially Honolulu, perfect for diners who want to escape the tourist-heavy zones and eat like a local.

Tips for Your Visit

While the seafood is undeniably the draw, keep in mind that space is at a premium. The layout is compact, and tables are set close together, which creates a communal, social atmosphere rather than a private one. Parking in the surrounding blocks requires a bit of patience, so plan your arrival accordingly. Whether you are coming in for a quick midday meal or a more relaxed dinner, the menu remains centered on seasonal availability, ensuring that the flavors on your plate are as fresh as the morning catch brought into the nearby harbor.

Truly sublime experience! Started with the abalone served escargot style (better than escargot!), served with the perfect bread for dipping in the cognac and brown butter. Then the tasting menu, each step of which was outstanding: first, the amuse bouche of two salmon rillette tartlets, topped with pickled mustard seed and ikura, full of flavor. Then the salad, kale with apples, fresh ricotta, pumpkin seeds, and toasted breadcrumbs that added a nice crunch, really elevated the salad. I had the seared hamachi as my main, which was so richly flavorful, served over a yukon gold mash with zucchini and cooked grape tomatoes. For dessert I had the flourless chocolate cake, which came topped with ice cream and strawberries, a perfect end to a perfect meal. But the service was even more outstanding: my server was knowledgable, friendly, and even greeted me by name at the door! Threadfin Bistro really delivers on the promise of thoughtful fusion cuisine. I can't wait to come back, and I recommend anyone make a special trip to dine here!

We were seated in the first section of the restaurant (direct entry from the back parking lot). There is a second room where they seat larger tables/groups. This second room is where they position a local musician/entertainer on Friday nights. The pros of dining here: 1-they source their bread from Breadshop in Kaimuki; 2-service is patient in explaining the portion size of the different appetizers and mains; 3-free parking is available albeit quite snug and requiring fellow drivers to be conscientious about their parking style; 4-awesome musician on Friday nights; 5-small but delightful flourless chocolate "cake"; 6-interesting wines by the glass. The cons: 1-value for money; 2-clams were served slightly raw/undercooked; 3-octopus and lobster portions were pretty small in their respective dishes.

Chef's inventive and interesting flavour combinations made our dinner a delicious culinary journey. Service was attentive and thoughtful. The lobster noodles, simple and so well prepared. An enjoyable evening!!

Intimate bistro setting. Service is excellent. Unfortunately, the acoustics of the dining area are not so good -- we couldn't hear ourselves over the loud group seated next to us. The food was uneven -- the salad of bitter greens was delicious; the seared hamachi was a bit overcooked and dry; the desserts were very good. Nice array of drinks.

Even though we were running late, they were very kind and accommodated us. The restaurant isn't very big but I like that. They have a small prix fixe menu with a couple of add on appetizer options. Food was delicious and I love that it's BYOB! I remember Chef Jason from the Food Company in Kailua and was so happy that his beet and apple goatcheese salad was available! It's so delicious!!!

Loved the food here at Threadfin! Small quaint bistro located at Kilohana Square, just make to enter from the rear. The prefix menu selection was great! I do highly recommend getting the escargot but it’s with Kona abalone as a starter which is an add-on but with the cognac butter sauce was amazing!

Incredible restaurant that is much welcomed in Honolulu! There are very few prix fixe menus and this one is exceptional and only 3 months old! Such a delicious experience, I highly recommend getting 1 of everything; you won’t want to miss all the flavors as each dish offers something unique. It’s a small, speak easy-like vibe and the staff are so kind. Make a reservation & check it out!

The Abalone from extra dishes menu was excellent! It was so yum! I enjoyed the Burrata salad - that was a 10/10 salad. Other dishes were good. But I felt the pace of the dishes were very rushed… I sat down at 620pm, and was in my Uber going back to the city at 728pm… just under an hour for the whole experience… Felt like a fast food chain with really good food than a restaurant serving proper 3 course menu. The experience was let down by the service. To be fair, the two girls in front of house worked really hard to attend to everyone. Unfortunately, I felt like they were missing a lot of the fine details in services. They were so occupied with clearing the tables, fetching the bills, placing orders, and bringing plates of food to the room packed with people. The whole experience would be more personal and memorable if they had another person there sharing the load. I really want to LOVE my experience at Threadfin. But I walked away feeling disappointed…
