About
A Slice of the Big Apple in Kakaʻako
Stepping into TheDeli feels like a sudden departure from the tropical humidity of Honolulu. Tucked away within the creative pulse of Kakaʻako, this spot captures the frenetic energy and no-nonsense charm of a classic New York bodega. The air is thick with the scent of toasted rye, briny pickles, and melting provolone, cutting through the island breeze.
The Anatomy of the Perfect Sub
This isn't your standard lunch spot. The menu centers on towering, overstuffed sandwiches that command both hands to eat. Locals gravitate toward their signature hot pastrami, piled high with a delicate, smoky edge, while the chicken salad offers a creamy, herb-forward counterpoint that avoids the typical blandness found elsewhere. Everything arrives on bread that manages to be crunchy on the outside while maintaining a pillowy interior—a rare feat in this humidity.
The Kakaʻako Character
The space is functional and efficient, characterized by an industrial aesthetic that mirrors the surrounding art murals and warehouse conversions. Don't expect white-glove service; the counter staff moves with a hurried, practiced efficiency that adds to the authentic, high-speed deli culture. Be prepared for a bit of a scramble if you arrive during the peak lunch hour, as the small floor plan can get tight quickly. Parking in the neighborhood requires a bit of patience, but the proximity to local breweries and boutique galleries makes it a logical stop during a day of exploring the district.
Whether you are a transplant craving a familiar taste of home or a Honolulu resident looking for a sandwich that actually packs a punch, this spot delivers consistent, reliable flavor. Grab a fountain soda, find a corner stool, and enjoy a meal that prioritizes quality ingredients over flash.

I'm excited there's a new Japanese lunch place near my office. The menu is large and has a lot of donburi-type Japanese soul food like oyakodon and curry. There are also pre-made bentos on display. The katsu curry was delicious with a generous portion size. I specifically noticed that they use good quality rice and I really appreciate the high standards. The interior is clean and the staff are friendly. Will be back for sure.

This has quickly become my favorite drop in, grab-n-go bento spot in downtown. The food is delicious, service is friendly and fast, everything is clean, and the menu isn't always the same. Because its always a 1 minute transaction, I put my hazards on, run in, and drive away without hassling with parking. Downtown is notoriously bad for parking, but this particular location lends itself to be one of the only easy places to grab food quickly without parking. If you do need to park, there is plenty at the post office. Anyway, check them out, theyre great.
