The Sunrise Shack
About
Fuel Your Honolulu Morning
Stepping up to the counter at The Sunrise Shack, you immediately feel the shift from the fast-paced energy of Waikiki to a laid-back, surf-inspired rhythm. This open-air hut is a staple for those seeking a nutrient-dense start to the day. The air is thick with the scent of freshly blended tropical fruit and the rich, nutty aroma of their signature bullet coffee. Whether you are grabbing a quick bite before hitting the waves or fueling up for a hike, the focus here is strictly on high-quality ingredients like grass-fed butter, MCT oil, and raw cacao.
What to Order
The menu is intentionally lean but packed with punch. The Blue Dream bowl is a visual standout, utilizing spirulina to create a vibrant oceanic hue that tastes as clean as it looks. Their coffee menu is the real draw, however. The Koko Coffee—blended with coconut oil and cocoa—offers a velvety texture that manages to be energizing without the typical post-caffeine crash. Expect a bit of a line during peak morning hours, but the breezy, wood-plank aesthetic makes the wait feel more like a morning meditation than a chore.
A Local State of Mind
Founded by professional surfers, the shack captures the essence of Hawaii’s North Shore lifestyle right in the heart of Honolulu. It is an ideal spot for solo travelers and health-conscious commuters who appreciate a minimalist approach to dining. Keep in mind that seating is limited and mostly outdoor-leaning; it is a grab-and-go hub rather than a place to linger for hours with a laptop. If you want a genuine taste of how the local surf community starts their day, this is your primary destination.

We visited during our short time in Honolulu and I saw that they had great reviews. Stopped in when they weren’t super busy and the worker didn’t seem happy for us to be there. Ordered the avocado toast, waiting about 15 minutes (again not super busy, maybe 3 ppl had ordered before us) and then this is what I got. Just SO confused how this was $14???? Overly salty and the bread was so thin

Delicious acai bowls and yummy avocado toast. Their coffee is also fantastic! The service is friendly and quick. Yes, it is on the pricier side but you should at least try it once!

Got the tuna sandwich on sourdough and it was sooo delicious! Fresh, and not fishy tasting. Perfect refreshing sandwich. Blue dream bowl also fantastic. Will definitely be back for the sandwich before we leave.

We woke up around 5 AM and were looking for a place to have breakfast. A spot came up at the top of my search with great reviews, so we decided to check it out. There was no wait when we arrived. We ordered a papaya bowl, berry toast, and coffee. The breakfast was great honestly, surprisingly good. The coffee was okay, but overall it was an amazing experience. We’ll definitely come back again tomorrow.

The papaya bowl is one of the best breakfasts I’ve ever had! Sooo extremely satisfying and it’s clear that they use high quality ingredients. Sets you up for a fabulous day!

Everything was great! Even though it was super busy, they were very quick with getting orders out. I ordered the vanilla latte and the peanut butter with banana toast—both were delicious. Someone accidentally took my drink, but the staff immediately made me a new one with no hesitation. Great service all around!

I’ve always loved coming here for their papaya bowls — the fruit is fresh, the toppings are usually generous, and the flavors always hit perfectly. The papaya itself was really good this time too, but I did feel like the portion and toppings were a bit skimped compared to my past visits. Not a huge deal, but definitely noticeable. Still a spot I enjoy, just hoping they bring the size and toppings back to their usual standard!

Ordered acai bowl and sandwich Bowl was great! Veg Sandwich had 2 flies on the sandwich which left us with a bad experience. Seems to be not a clean place to order food.
