Pre-Flight Flavors in Honolulu

Finding a reliable bite while navigating the hustle of Daniel K. Inouye International Airport can be a challenge. The Local at HNL serves as a convenient pitstop for travelers who want to bypass generic fast food in favor of classic island comfort. Located right within the airport terminal, it offers an approachable menu that leans heavily into Hawaiian staples like hearty loco moco and fresh poke bowls.

A Busy Terminal Oasis

The atmosphere here is undeniably fast-paced, reflecting the energy of tourists catching inter-island flights and locals grabbing a quick lunch before heading out. You will hear the constant hum of rolling suitcases and terminal announcements, which creates a specific kind of travel-centric soundtrack. The seating is functional and open, designed for high turnover, though it offers a welcome vantage point for people-watching.

What to Expect

The kitchen focuses on delivering familiar, filling portions. If you are craving a last taste of the islands before boarding, the kalua pork is a consistent draw, offering that smoky, shredded texture expected of local-style cooking. Be mindful that during peak morning or early afternoon windows, the counter service line can stretch quite long. It is a no-frills, practical spot where the priority is getting a satisfying meal served hot and quick. While the space can feel tight when full, it is easily the most efficient way to get a local-style plate without leaving the grounds of the Honolulu airport.

The restaurant was nicely decorated, and has great views of the outdoors. Pricing is a bit up there, but I think that's all airport places as usual. The menu was limited and portions were quite small when we ordered food. A heads up, the bottled water on the tables are paid, so don't drink from them unless you're willing to pay extra for just water.

Nice breakfast. Calm area with less foot traffic and no announcements. Forgot to take picture of breakfast but it was good and filled me up. A touch more than Burger King but well worth it for a break from the stress race of traveling. Good service and easy ordering and paying with QR code.

Very nice restaurant with bar. Windows offer a beautiful view of the garden below. I was disappointed in their lack of menu choices. I placed my order using the QR code and it was very convenient to use but they reduce the number of items offered from their original menu. i.e. For hamburgers they only offer a cheeseburger. Poke only had three choices. Everything seemed overpriced. I had the misoyaki mahi which was $27.00. Two fillets of fish glazed with miso and served over rice. I suggest using their menu from their QR code instead of the original menu to see what is actually available.

I had few drinks, otherwise I would have paid less. Considering it's an airport, which is busy enough, this is a great place! The food was good and the shot/beer discount was appreciated. The service personnel that work here make this a 5 star rating. Good people, with kind and honest responses, as well as recommendations, made this travel experience worth while.

On our way home from the North Shore we decided to try out The Locals Fine Dining at the Honolulu airport. It should be expected that in Hawaii plus at the airport that things are going to be expensive so prepare yourself. I ordered the Mahi Mahi tacos with a Melon Mojito and my wife ordered a chicken Caesar salad with an Espresso Martini, $120 total The Mahi Mahi taco was good, fish well prepared and everything fresh. I would say a bit heavy on the onions in the pico but other wise good. The mango salsa that came with the fresh tortillas chips definitely stole the show! It was fantastic. The Melon Mojito was not the best I have had. The mint was not ground at all to release the flavor and if there was any melon juice in the drink it was hiding. My wife enjoyed both her salad and her drink, however, the Martini was a Macadamian nut variety and it was absolutely full of the nut pieces and a bit hard to drink. There was no froth as expected but other wise fine. Overall the experience was ok. When you see fine dining it isn't always the food that makes it fine, it is the service that makes it. We asked for water along with our drinks, but the water was brought only a few minutes before we got ready to leave, even though we requested it 3 times. Being understaffed isn't an excuse to me, you stop seating people if you can't serve them to a certain level of standards. I would select a different location to eat in any future visits.

I wish I would have went to Burger King.. this is cafeteria style type food service. The sign said please wait I be seated. Whenever what I thought was a waitress waved us in from the back of the room I knew we were in trouble. The app at the table didn’t work. The waitress had to be IT department she finally gave up and took our order… oh yeah there clear sign that said each person at the table has to use the same phone. Same thing with paying the bill the waitress said I could use the app. After several attempts she took my card. I ordered a beer it said 20oz on menu. When she brought it out. I told my wife this is not 20oz. Anyway I got ahead of myself. I’m sure the food was okay at some point. By the time it made it to us it was cold. I should have ask for a manager.. I think I’m in disbelief that there was even one there. They should take Local off the sign out front and put dumb.

Calm and relaxing spot before our flight! The service was excellent — even the manager stopped by our table to check in, and our waitress was so kind and attentive. We had a burger, which was delicious and came with plenty of fries, plus a Mai Tai and Mojito that were both great. Overall, a perfect place to relax and enjoy good food and drinks while waiting for our flight to Los Angeles.

Awful experience. If I had any other choice, I would not choose this place. We were a group of more than 6 people, including a child, but no one explained in advance about the automatic 18% service charge. At the end of lunch, they suddenly mentioned it, and I was forced to pay the “company policy” charge. The reason was never explained properly. We ordered from a QR code menu with no photos, which made the system confusing and frustrating. The most unprofessional part was the manager’s comment: “Welcome to Hawaii.”

We had an hour and twenty minutes before our flight took off, and decided to try this place. The service was friendly and quick, and the food was better than most airport fare. The tables were fairly accessible, with many seats overlooking the courtyard/gardens (through the windows). It would have been nicer if there were open air seating options. True rating would be 3.5 if Google offered a more nuanced scale.
