Dining Where the Runway Meets the Pacific

Perched right at the edge of Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, The Lanai at Mamala Bay offers a perspective on Honolulu that few civilians ever see. As you pull into the parking lot, the roar of C-17s occasionally punctuating the afternoon provides a raw, industrial contrast to the tranquil, sweeping views of the Mamala Bay coastline. It is a spot built for those who appreciate the intersection of military history and casual island relaxation.

Savoring the Catch and Local Flavors

The menu highlights local Hawaiian influences, centering on approachable comfort food that pairs perfectly with the salty ocean breeze. You will find staples like the furikake-crusted catch of the day, which maintains a perfect, flaky texture against the savory-sweet crunch of the seasoning. On busier afternoons, the open-air layout can get a bit brisk, so keep a light jacket handy even if the tropical sun is high. It is the kind of venue where the focus remains on the expansive horizon rather than white-tablecloth pretense.

The Atmosphere of the Hickam Shoreline

This is not your typical high-end Waikiki tourist haunt. The atmosphere here is deeply rooted in the camaraderie of the military community. The seating flows effortlessly from the indoor bar area to the expansive outdoor patio, where the scent of sea salt and grilled island proteins dominates the air. It is ideal for a relaxed lunch after a day on the golf course or a quiet sunset drink. While the parking can be a bit tight near the entrance, the tradeoff is an unobstructed view of the waves crashing against the southern shore of Oahu. Whether you are craving a cold local brew or a hearty plate of kalua pork, the environment remains consistently laid-back and unpretentious.

Went there yesterday with my husband after having a very long day flying from DC. It was nice to relax, have wonderful food and a very good service. The drinks were strong and what we selected was delicious. The prices were comparable to what we have in DC. It was very windy on the lanai, but that’s nobody’s fault. An overall good experience with this place. Will definitely come back again.

EDIT 10/16/2025: Visited for a second time in the past month and the salmon was not as big of a hit as it was before. Did not look or taste as appetizing as the last time. Not as pleased, which is a bummer since my husband, and I were excited to come today for our 16 year anniversary based on our previous experience. Staff was friendly and kind as always, the salmon was what disappointed due to it being the whole reason we chose this restaurant for our special day. I have changed my food star amount due to the inconsistency in quality. 09/25/2025: Katharina P. And the chefs during the 12-1 pm shift on September 25th were AMAZING! My husband and I came here about a year ago and were not pleased so we had not been back since. We decided to give today a try so our friend who is in town could have a view while eating before flying back home. Today completely changed our minds. Kat was so welcoming and friendly and recommended dishes that did not disappoint. The garlic cheese dip and lasagna ring were delicious. The salmon stole the show though, and everyone at the table had to have a bite and wished we had more! Grateful for such a wonderful experience for our friend and ourselves before she leaves. Definitely will be back again very soon!

Came here with our family on a Friday evening. People were super friendly and nice. However the food was so bad. Our $50 steak (requested medium) looked like beef jerky burnt and WELLLL done. Fried pickles overcooked to where you couldn’t taste pickle. Beautiful view and cool spot. Really wish the food was better.

Delicious fish tacos, Kat took great care of us, and views don't stink! Oddly, the AI machine "Kayla" that took my call to make/confirm a reservation but did not actually make the reservation; fortunately, it was early and there were open tables!

Great lunch with the family. Burgers were delicious and the beers were cold. And we were treated by four F-22s taking off. Thanks Katharina for the excellent service!

The scenery was good, the food was excellent and our waitress was very good. A pet peeve of mine is the restrooms and the restrooms were not very clean and smelled bad, even had bugs such as ants in the sink. You can watch planes take off, and there are even video games for the kids. This is only for people with military access.

Nice restaurant/bar. Ordered fish and chips; 2 large pieces of overpriced Cod and some French fries for $18 plus drink & tax came to $27. Place wasn't crowded but still took awhile to get my order. It's on the beach and you can watch planes taking off from HNL on the runway that goes out into the ocean.

A good value on Wednesday when kids eat free. They have figured out how to keep the birds away using an artificial "predator " sound. Startling at first. The food was fine, the service just a bit slow but appropriate for HI time. Da Bomb burger was the favorite at our table.

On each visit, I take my family over to Hickam Beach and eat over at The Lanai to enjoy the view. The parking lot which is shared by visitors to the beach and The Lanai are limited so you may have to drive around a bit. Every time we've been to The Lanai, we've only had to wait less than 5 minutes before being seated. This time we waited 15 minutes and it wasn't crowded at all. We had 2 separate waitresses walk by the host stand to state someone would be with us. We were a party of 3 and there were many empty tables outside near the bar. Once seated, we ordered our drinks. Waiter came by within 5 minutes and placed our orders. Food was delicious as always. Poke especially fresh. Our water came by frequently and he did a fantastic job. Overall, good but not great experience. The management needs to ensure someone checks the front to take care of those waiting to be seated. There are other restaurants but I want to support the base when I'm in town.

Here's my feedback on my recent dining experience at a restaurant on base that offers stunning views of the ocean and airplane takeoffs. Firstly, I must say that the ambiance and scenery at the restaurant were truly remarkable. The combination of beautiful ocean views and the sight of airplanes taking off created a unique and memorable dining atmosphere. However, I regret to inform you that I was somewhat disappointed with the quality of the food and the pricing. While the presentation and taste of the salad with fish were satisfactory, I felt that the coconut shrimp dish fell short of expectations. Specifically, the portion size of the coconut shrimp, consisting of only five pieces, did not justify its price. Moreover, I was underwhelmed by the flavor and overall value of the dish. In terms of pricing, I found the overall menu to be slightly overpriced, especially considering the average quality of the food. It would be beneficial if the restaurant reviewed its pricing strategy to align with the culinary experience they aim to provide to their customers. Despite these areas of improvement, I would like to acknowledge the attentive service provided by the restaurant staff. The waitstaff were courteous, accommodating, and ensured a pleasant dining experience. In conclusion, while the views from the restaurant were undoubtedly impressive, I believe there is room for improvement in terms of the food quality and pricing. I hope that my feedback can be taken into consideration to enhance the overall dining experience for future customers.
