The Happy Hawaiian Cafe
About
A Slice of Island Life
Tucked away from the bustling tourist corridors of Waikiki, The Happy Hawaiian Cafe captures the laid-back spirit of local Honolulu dining. As you walk in, the scent of slow-roasted kalua pork mingles with the sweetness of fresh pineapple, setting the tone for a meal that feels like a backyard luau. The space is modest and utilitarian, favoring quick service and authentic flavors over white-tablecloth pretense.
Island Comforts on a Plate
The menu highlights traditional plate lunch culture. Locals flock here for the signature loco moco, featuring a house-made patty topped with a rich, savory gravy that coats every grain of sticky white rice. The macaroni salad—creamy, chilled, and perfectly seasoned—is a mandatory accompaniment that balances the saltiness of the entrees. You might find the seating area a bit snug during the lunch rush, but the turnover is fast, and the camaraderie among regulars creates a lively, rhythmic hum of conversation.
Who Should Stop By?
This spot is perfect for those craving an honest meal without the frills of high-end resort dining. Whether you are grabbing a quick bite before heading to the beach or looking to fuel up after a hike, the portions are hearty enough to keep you going. Just keep in mind that parking in this part of town can be a bit of a puzzle, so plan your arrival accordingly. It is a genuine, unpretentious stop for anyone wanting to eat like a true Honolulu resident.

My son’s favorite part about our trip to Hawaii (age7), the chocolate chip pancakes were his favorite. I personally loved the coconut ones :) Family went back twice while staying there because we all loved the food & it was a convenient walk from the Sheraton. The service was great, guy taking orders was super nice.

This location is easily walkable from downtown Honolulu hotels. It is off the main streets. Service was fast and friendly. The food was hot and delicious. My husband had spam and eggs and I had an omelet with 🥞 pancakes.

Good food, friendly service. Great breakfast staples. (Eggs, bacon, pancakes etc) Each order is made to order 1 at a time by the 2 people running the place So can become a long wait. It's outside, but covered, not the best ambiance, so don't go if you're looking for fancy. But they do use real plates & silverware.
