The Counter
About
Design Your Own Burger Experience
Located within the bustling Kahala Mall, The Counter is all about autonomy. Forget pre-set menus that limit your creativity; here, you hold the clipboard. The process is straightforward: choose your protein, pick from an array of cheeses, layer on fresh toppings, and finish it off with a signature sauce. Whether you are craving a standard beef patty or a plant-based alternative, the kitchen team grills each order to precise temperatures, filling the dining area with the savory scent of seared meat and caramelized onions.
Industrial Energy in Kahala
The space leans into an industrial aesthetic, characterized by exposed ductwork, communal tables, and a high-energy soundtrack that keeps the pace moving. It is a loud, bustling spot, which makes it perfect for a post-shopping lunch with friends or a casual dinner when you want a hearty meal without the fuss of white-tablecloth service. The staff maintains a brisk, efficient rhythm that matches the shopping center's lively foot traffic.
The Details
Don't be surprised if you have to hunt for a parking spot during peak weekend hours at the mall; the lot fills up quickly as locals flock to this Honolulu favorite. While the menu allows for over a million possible combinations, the sweet potato fries and onion strings are consistent winners that arrive at the table piping hot and crunchy. If you find yourself indecisive, their menu of curated signature burgers offers a balanced starting point, though the true joy of this Hawaii burger joint is crafting something entirely your own.

Hello my Black Community! Me and my husband were visiting the waikiki area, and decided to venture out for more local food. So we came here. Fair warning my brothers and sisters It depends on who is working at this restaurant at the time, to determine if its a good atmosphere or not. Be Aware when coming here!! The food was good. Its just some of the servers attitude 😒

Food was decent enough. Expensive, but can get anything you want. The counter beer from Maui brewing is boring but I understand why. They have good turkey burger that is rare to find locally. Sweet potato fries are decent and also rare to find. Overall nice, just expensive like everything else.

First time eating at the counter and Lexus went out of her way to explain how ordering your own burger went. Normally not the one to leave reviews unless there is actual customer service but Lexus was very thorough and clear. Which I appreciated because I like having my sauce condiments in the side so that my bun isn’t soaked by the time it gets to me and it ends up being a mess but she actually mentioned that so I was able to really enjoy that horseradish aioli. Definitely will come back 👍🏽

It’s astonishing that any restaurant would prioritize appeasing prejudiced patrons over treating a disabled guest with basic dignity and equal access. Even more disturbing is the idea that so-called “good customers” would attempt to force out a disabled person and a clearly well-trained service dog. If that’s their definition of “good,” they can keep it. And a waitress who doesn’t understand state and federal law—specifically that you cannot ask a disabled person with a legitimate service animal to wait outside—has no business enforcing policies she clearly doesn’t comprehend. This isn’t the 1950s. “Back of the bus” thinking has no place in modern society. Reading that review was unbelievable. The fact that staff and customers felt emboldened to behave this way suggests a serious failure in leadership and training. Businesses should not cave to discriminatory demands to protect their bottom line. They should uphold the law and basic human decency—period. Frankly, this is the kind of conduct that invites scrutiny. Equal access isn’t optional, and discrimination should never be rewarded

If you look at the past two reviews before me, there was a food poisoning report and unsafe handling report within the last six months. That says something is going wrong with their food handling procedures whether in the milkshakes or beef, or veggies. I ordered a breakfast burger while my other at the table ordered a bbq burger. We shared an Oreo shake and had the brussel sprouts. Food was small portions at 1/3 of a pound of beef excluding fries, and that’s all you get unless you upgrade the burger for just over $6. Three hours later and we’re having diarrhea and a mild fever. Be careful here! Place needs an inspection. Wouldn’t go back even with a discount. Might have to call health inspector. Mind you my significant other here was pregnant at the time. Not safe! Overall the place isn’t terrible taste wise. Just for the health concern and not being satiated after the meal; I can’t say it was worth it.

I LOVE The Counter. The burgers are delectably delicious - who doesn’t love a customizable burger??? And their milkshakes are to die for. Love love love. And, even better, their patio is dog friendly! As a dog trainer, The Counter is the absolute perfect training spot. I love taking dogs in training here to get them accustomed to settling under the table while their owners have a good meal. C‘Mon - burgers, shakes, and dogs? It doesn’t get better than that!!!

As always, very tasty food that’s served incredibly quickly! The Bacon BBQ Burger had deep fried shoestring onion rings that were delightful! The bbq sauce was sweet and tangy. Honestly, my wife had the Teriyaki burger and after one bite of that, I wish I had gotten that burger instead! Yum! We have leftover fries for days, which I’m not complaining about :)

Great service, delicious burgers! He took me here since he liked it and I had yet to try it. The service was fast and our server gave us some recommendations on items to try. We chose the build your own burger (vegan) and nashville chicken, as well as the cauliflower wings appetizer. Everything was so tasty! Fresh ingredients and didn’t need to wait long to get our meal. The cherries tomatoes were forgotten in my burger, but everything was yummy so I hadn’t even noticed. Cauliflower wings have fresh herbs which is a nice touch. We look forward to eating here again!

The new check in process was smooth. I ordered the minis. They had a great flavor. The chicken chili was chunky and tasty. As always the sweet potato fries were my favorite. The dipping sauce works so we'll. Liz's chicken bacon ranch was just massive.

My first time ever coming to The Counter Custom Burgers and I can say, it surely will not be my last. I reviewed 4 of their signature sandwiches and all of them did not disappoint. My favorite sandwich that I en(Counter), pun intended, was the Bison Is Gouda burger. It was everything that I was hoping that it would taste like. Yes, it was more overcooked than what I asked for, but maybe the cooks feel it would have been better mid-well over mid-rare. But, I seriously still enjoyed every bite that I taken from this burger. If I could give it six stars I would. Now the one thing I had some disappointment in and i mean some disappointment, was the Nashville Hot chicken sandwich. It didn't have the hotness that I was looking forward to. I love me some hot foods and if you going to say Nashville Hot, I would like for the restaurant to make sure they know how hot Nashville Hot really should be before serving it. And secondly, make sure that the chicken is already smothered in that Nashville Hotness before serving to the customer. If you were trying to protect us from extreme hotness 🔥, there's no need to do so. All in all, I will definitely keep coming here for my bison 🦬 burger fix for sure!!!
