A Teppanyaki Pop-Up in the Heart of Makaloa
Finding a high-energy culinary performance in the middle of Honolulu doesn’t always require a resort reservation. The Blue Truck Teppanyaki brings the sizzle of an open-air hibachi grill directly to the bustling corridors of Makaloa Street. It is an unpretentious setup that turns the sidewalk into an interactive kitchen, perfect for those who want a quick, flame-grilled meal without the typical stiff-shirt service.
The Sights and Sounds of the Grill
The air here is thick with the scent of searing garlic, butter, and caramelized soy sauce. You will hear the rhythmic clatter of metal spatulas hitting the steel surface, a signature sound that alerts passersby that the chef is mid-flip. The menu focuses on classic Japanese-style teppanyaki, emphasizing tender proteins and stir-fried vegetables that maintain a crisp texture despite the intense heat of the griddle. Expect generous portions of steak or shrimp served alongside steamed rice, all prepared right before your eyes in a fast-paced, fluid motion.
What to Know Before You Go
While the food is top-tier for street-side dining, keep in mind that this is a grab-and-go experience. Seating is minimal to non-existent, and the proximity to the road means you are dining amidst the authentic, urban hum of Honolulu traffic. It is an ideal spot for office workers grabbing a savory lunch or locals seeking a no-nonsense, high-flavor dinner. If you are aiming to visit during the peak evening hours, prepare for a short wait as the cook works through orders sequentially. It is precisely the kind of grit and flavor that defines the modern Oʻahu food scene—straightforward, hot, and satisfying.

I got the steak roll. The meat was awesome, thinly sliced and juicy. I added horseradish. The julienned potatoes were undercooked, however. If you like your potatoes starchy and a tiny bit tough, that's my experience. Service was great, price was high considering undercooked potatoes. The atmosphere is the food court. Expect it to be busy at lunch.

Their burrito used to be so good but the last one we bought, they changed the greens! They put red cabbage instead of the leafy greens that we were used to! It was so bitter. 🤮

I ordered takeout. The food tasted good and I liked it, but it didn’t come out the way I asked. I requested the sauce on the side, but it was poured over the meat instead. Also, I found a hair in the dish, which was quite disappointing. The staff didn’t seem very attentive. You can park at Ala Moana Center, but it’s hard to find a spot during lunchtime.

Tried its popular Da Original Steak Roll plate that came with 2 scoops of rice and some leafy greens. The roll was made from thinly sliced steak and shredded potato. Combining with its sweet sour soy sauce, this made a delicious lunch. The meat was tender and flavorful, unfortunately there weren’t too much meat in this plate lunch that costed $20.

Quick service. Ordered Da Original Steak Roll ($18.50) Thinly sliced steak rolled around julienned potato, includes tossed greens and ponzu dipping sauce. Food was well seasoned and I liked the ponzu sauce a lot! Located in the Ala Moana Lanai food court. Bathroom nearby. Parking lot always busy but not impossible. 15 min pick up parking available.

Located in the Lana’i Food Court at Ala Moana Center, once you see Macys, the food court is next door. Love this place. It gets busy at the normal high times lunch and dinner. My favorite dishes are their New York Steak Plate and their Bulgolgi plate. The New York steak plate comes with a medium thick slab of steak, grilled to your preference, the sides are just rice and garlic chips, and the steak served on a bed of lettuce. The Bulgolgi beef is served on top a bed of rice and garlic chips. Love them both and I get them everytime!!!

I had a couple of items here. Both were decent. I wouldn’t have it again as it was more expensive than food that was twice as good and in Waikiki. There was too much fat on the ribeye however, it was pretty ok for the most part. For value, I’d rate this a 2.5/5.

Teppanyaki Farmer at Ala Moana Shopping Center is a great little spot for lunch or dinner! The food is cooked right in front of you with style and flavor. Highly recommend getting the ribeye and New York steak cooked medium rare — that’s where the magic happens. Juicy, tender, and full of flavor! The chefs are fun to watch. Great vibes, delicious food, and a cool experience all around.

Short review: Ribeye Burrito is good “fresh burrito” but not a typical latin style but still enjoyable. Good blend between two styles. Japanese/Latin . . After only so much poke and Musubi, one will eventually crave the west coast Latin delicacies. For me that’s burritos. The burrito is something that can almost never go wrong, but in some cases maybe it can? As I stopped by this food court the word “burrito” caught my eye. What would a burrito place be doing here in a predominately Asian style eatery. I was intrigued and order the ribeye burrito. As I received it I was already happy with the portion size but the true test would be the ingredients. As I took my first bite it was not was I expecting when it comes to a Latin style burrito but instead it was another style. This was more of a “fresh” style burrito . The meat was delicious and seasoned well and the other ingredients (mostly fresh veggies) made it all come together in what I call a “Japanese fresh burrito”. While it was not was I craving in a Latin style burrito this was still a great eat. Next time I am craving a blend of Japanese eats and Latin I will definitely return.

I love this place! Their food is always fresh, healthyish, and delicious! Prices have really gone up (but where hasn’t?), but I feel like this place is a step above a lot of other places. This food court area is nicer than the main one in Ala Moana, I feel like overall there’s better choices.
