Thai Issan Cuisine Waikiki
About
Spicy Northern Thai Roots in the Heart of Waikiki
Stepping into Thai Issan Cuisine, you leave the high-rise energy of Honolulu behind for the bold, funk-forward flavors of Northeastern Thailand. This isn't your standard pad thai shop; the kitchen focuses on the complex, chili-laden, and acidic profiles characteristic of the Issan region. The air is often heavy with the scent of toasted rice powder and fresh lime, signaling that the chef isn't holding back on the traditional preparation of their signature Som Tum.
The Issan Experience
If you crave authenticity, the Laab Gai—minced chicken seasoned with chili, fish sauce, and fresh herbs—provides a sharp, heat-filled contrast to the sticky rice that serves as your primary utensil. The atmosphere leans toward a casual, no-frills neighborhood eatery, perfect for locals seeking a quick lunch or travelers tired of tourist-trap prices near the beach. The dining room is compact, so expect a lively, sometimes boisterous soundscape when the dinner rush hits.
Local Nuances
While the bold flavors keep regulars coming back, keep in mind that the intensity of the spice levels is genuine—if they ask how hot you want it, take their warning seriously. Parking in the area can be a game of patience, but the proximity to the major Waikiki thoroughfares makes it an accessible stop after a day of surfing or shopping. It’s a grounded, unpretentious spot where the menu does the talking, serving up authentic Thai street food staples that transport your palate straight to the borders of Laos without needing a plane ticket.

Amazing food. My favorite Thai restaurant in Waikiki. I’ve been here before with friends and came in with my husband today. The food was amazing, again. My husband is on mostly a vegan diet and there were veggie and tofu options for almost all the dishes. Great service and great food.

Ordered the pad Thai and pad kee mao/pad c u (honestly, I don’t remember haha), as well as the papaya salad (not pictured). Food came out super quickly! Papaya salad was okay, I’ve had much better. Missing flavor from the sauce. :/ Noodle cuisines were tasty though! Good flavor and not too salty. Only complaint is that the presentation was a tad messy as you can see on the pad Thai plate.

I ordered drunken noodle with shrimp and it was sooo delicious! I usually can’t finish a whole dish but it was so tasty so I finished it all! If you love stir fried noodle I really recommend drunken noodle☺️ I think you could choose additional ingredients like shrimp that i chose. There were more options like seafood, pork etc. I recommend 😊

August visit. Huge menu, so while there is something for everyone, it takes a while to choose. Can’t go past spring rolls. A little heavy on the onions in each dish but great flavours and good service.

Super impressed with this Thai restaurant. We travel to Thailand often and are really picky about Thai places not in Thailand. This place is fantastic. The staff are super friendly and work their butts off. They could use another server but they get the job done. The owner was our main server and a tall male server there was also very impressive with his work ethic. Food was delicious. Place is clean and basic. Super busy when we were there but we got seated right away. Prices are quite reasonable given this is Waikiki and a pandemic.. Their prices haven't skyrocketed like so many others. Great variety you won't go wrong having a bite here.

Had a delicious lunch at Thai Issan when visiting Oahu. All of the food was fresh and came out quickly. Don’t forget to ask for some chilis on the side for some heat!

If you are looking for authentic Thai food, look no further. I lived in Thailand for years, my wife is Thai, and we both very much enjoyed the food here. Some hints for those who are used to Americanized Thai food. Don't order the Pad Thai.... I've never seen an actual Thai person eat that. Don't order the green curry... while Thai people eat that sometimes, there is so much more that is better. If you want a standard Thai meal, order the Som Tum (Papaya salad, pictured... most Thai people can eat this every day), larb mu (ground pork, also pictured), and/or pad gra pow (you can do beef or pork) thai people eat these three staples regularly, and this restaurant does them all well with an Isan (northeastern Thailand) flavor. Finally, expect this food to be spicy. Real Thai food is, and Isan food is quite spicy. If you aren't into spicy food you will run into challenges.

We ordered takeout - pad Thai and green curry. Really authentic and delicious - hot is very spicy, not American standard joke spicy level, which is what we want. Be careful. Only thing to note is that curry doesn’t come with rice and you have pay $2 extra to get rice.
