About
A Crispy Tradition in Kalihi
Stepping into Teruya’s Andagi, you are immediately greeted by the sweet, toasted aroma of deep-fried dough. This modest spot in the heart of Honolulu has become a local institution, dedicated almost entirely to the Okinawan donut. Unlike the airy, yeast-risen varieties found in mainland shops, these are dense, cake-like spheres with a satisfyingly crunchy exterior and a soft, golden center.
The Art of the Okinawan Donut
The magic here lies in the simplicity of the recipe. Each batch is dropped into the fryer with precise timing to ensure the iconic jagged edges that define a perfect andagi. They arrive warm, encased in paper bags that quickly turn translucent with oil—a sign of quality that every regular knows to expect. While the plain flavor is the gold standard, the experience is best shared; they are rarely bought in single quantities. Watching the staff maneuver the fryers with long wooden sticks is a masterclass in efficiency.
Local Flavor and Practical Tips
This is a grab-and-go experience, perfect for a quick snack while navigating the bustling Kalihi district. Don't go looking for table service or a cafe lounge; this is a functional, no-frills kitchen where the focus remains strictly on the frying. Be prepared to hunt for a spot if you are driving, as the small parking area can get backed up during mid-morning rushes when the batches are pulled fresh from the oil. Whether you are a long-time resident seeking a nostalgic treat or a visitor curious about the deep-rooted Okinawan influence on Hawaiian snack culture, these donuts provide an authentic, sugar-dusted connection to the islands' history.

We used Teruya's Andagi for my father's service in Feb 2026 and ordered 130 bentos (karaage, garlic chicken, assorted large roll, veggie) and andagi and sweet potato mochi, and all were a hit! The shrimp tempura and garlic chicken large bento roll was the most popular by far! Albert was super-responsive and very professional in my email communications with him and the bentos were delivered on time. I will definitely use Teruya's Andagi in the future and you should, too! Thank you and your staff so much, Albert!

Took one bite and KNEW I’ll be back the next time I’m in the area. The sweet potato mochi is delightful, crispy and chewy at the same time. I regret only buying 3 (one for each of us). Bought two andagi (Japanese donuts), they’re pretty much like an old-fashioned. Also bought a shrimp tempura roll bento, which comes with sweet potato tempura and fried chicken. Sweet little spot, can’t go wrong with anything you pick!

Not sure if their restaurant is open right now but you can find their delicious bento and andagi every Tuesday afternoon at the Kaiser HS farmers market. Don’t let the long line discourage you - you’ll want to get that andagi and sweet potato mochi. Don’t fill up on that, though - the bentos are a great deal. I got one packed with a shrimp roll, potato croquettes, chicken karaage, and side veggies for $7. Vendors don’t usually get the same location every week, so just look for his table - and the line!
