Tempura Kiki
About
Crisp Perfection in the Heart of Honolulu
Stepping into Tempura Kiki feels less like walking into a restaurant and more like slipping into a quiet corner of Ginza. This intimate spot in Honolulu prioritizes the delicate art of frying, where the goal isn't just a golden crust, but a translucent, airy coating that enhances rather than masks the ingredients. You’ll hear the rhythmic, high-pitched sizzle of fresh batter hitting hot oil the moment you walk through the door, a sound that promises quality.
The Omakase Experience
The kitchen operates with surgical precision. Chef-driven menus focus on seasonal highlights, ranging from sweet shrimp to locally sourced vegetables that retain their vibrant snap. The light, sesame-infused oil blend creates a distinct nutty aroma that greets you immediately, setting the stage for a meal that feels remarkably clean despite the frying process. This is the ideal destination for solo diners or couples looking to observe the craftsmanship behind the counter.
Local Nuances
Be prepared for a very compact dining environment; the space is intentionally small to ensure every guest receives their tempura at the peak of its temperature and texture. Because the seating is limited, planning your visit in advance is essential. It is a no-frills, focus-on-the-food atmosphere that captures the disciplined spirit of traditional Japanese cooking right here on the island.

We stopped here for lunch after arriving on Oahu during our honeymoon. It was a delightful meal that reminded us of our trip to Japan a couple years ago! The servers were nice, and the specials were perfect for us.

The tempura here is truly delicious. I especially love the set meal, which comes with three different types of salt, so I never get bored of it. It’s just as authentic as Japanese tempura, and I really appreciate that they serve it in two separate batches so I can enjoy it fresh out of the fryer. Next time, I’m going to try the tempura rice bowl! Thank you.

Nick was an attentive and kind server. The shrimp veggie tempura and karrage chicken were perfection amd oh so delicious! Plenty to share between two and be fully satisfied since it all comes a bowl of miso (best we've had outside the states) rice, salad, and pickled veggies salad. Hands down amazing!

Why go to Japan when you can have fresh, delicious tempura here? 😉 Everything was perfectly cooked Small Lobster is half tail Jumbo shrimp/ebi was worth the extra charge Pork was a thinly sliced premium, lean cut. I was debating this and glad I went for it! The sweet potato was a small piece The dipping sauce was really nice. The pickled cabbage, cucumber and daikon salad was a tasty complement. Overall, I would definitely go again. Forget the long lines at the other udon place. I’m so glad I ate here!

This place has a cool and honestly an awesome concept. Freshly fried tempura, nothing beats that! We got the deluxe set and everything came in waves that made the dining experience so satisfying. The tempura’s were crunchy and tasty, fried to perfection. The service was exemplary. It’s a great place to eat after a busy day in Waikiki.

The shrimp tempura had a firm texture and tasted great, while the vegetables were a bit underwhelming. The portion of rice was relatively small, but considering it’s in Waikiki, it’s understandable.

We were sad to find that this place has declined since our last visit to Hawaii in December 2024. Back then, the food was so good that we came every other day. Everything was freshly fried and served in batches. Because of those great memories, we came here for our first meal this trip, but the experience was disappointing. The food was overly oily, sauces were already added, and items didn’t seem freshly prepared in batches anymore. It’s unfortunate to see such a promising tempura place lose the quality that once made it special.

Truly magical setting and ambience when you walk in. You feel right as if you were in Japan with great service and food that is off the charts delicious. The food is prepared and cooked to perfection. The batter is light and you still capture the essence of the flavors without any problems. Highly recommend.

THE BEST tempura place. I’ve been to many Japanese tempura spots around the world Japan, South Korea, mainland US, and Vancouver BC and this is still the best one. We come back every time we are in Honolulu. The tempura batter is so thin yet extremely crispy that you don’t even feel like you need the sauce because you can feel the rich taste of the fresh ingredients. The sauce that comes with it is also really good pairing though, and the service is amazing. Everyone has been so kind every time we’ve visited since our first time in 2023. Super fast service, incredible food, and the location is in a food court, so it’s easy to find and very convenient.

Great service! Nick was really attentive to all the details to the meal as well as giving us recommendations on what to order and how everything was made! Food is amazing and the tempura was delicious. The udon is on another level when combined with the sauce!
