A Masterclass in Edomae Craftsmanship

Stepping into Tempura Ichika feels less like a typical dinner out and more like an invitation into a private culinary workshop. Located in the heart of Honolulu, this intimate counter-seating establishment focuses exclusively on the delicate art of Edomae-style tempura. The air carries the faint, nutty scent of premium sesame oil—the hallmark of a kitchen that prioritizes tradition over shortcuts.

The Chef’s Precise Choreography

Chef-driven and minimalist, the experience here revolves around the rhythm of the fry station. You will watch as seasonal ingredients, often sourced from both local Hawaiian waters and high-end Japanese markets, are encased in a batter so thin it’s nearly translucent. The result is a crunch that gives way instantly to the natural juices of the prawn or the earthy sweetness of a root vegetable.

The menu leans into an omakase format, meaning you yield control to the kitchen. It is an ideal spot for those who appreciate the silence of focused dining; there is no background pop music here, just the rhythmic sizzle of the fryer. Keep in mind that seating is extremely limited, and the pace is deliberate—this isn’t a place to grab a quick bite before a movie. It is a slow, methodical study of texture.

Refined Dining in the Pacific

While Honolulu has no shortage of high-end Japanese cuisine, this spot stands out for its uncompromising commitment to the craft. Whether you are a tempura purist or simply curious about how elevated the technique can become, the flavor profile is consistently clean and remarkably light. It is a quiet, sophisticated escape for anyone looking to experience authentic culinary precision within a short drive of the bustling Waikiki district.

Wonderful service, nice atmosphere, an experience. However, having eaten at Omakase Tempura Wakatake at the Grand Prince Hotel in Tokyo as well as an omakase tempura place in Kyoto this restaurant is not comparable. The tempura was good ,but be prepared that it is different than what you would get with a common set menu at a regular tempura shop..which is fine and expected. Each item is served immediately after cooking. However, some of the items had a sauce on them that completely overpowered the tempura and the item fried. There was too much shaved raw onion in the salad. The sashimi dishes were just okay. There is plenty of food served to satisfy your appetite. Maybe an off night but $400 for two (with no alcohol) , I was extremely disappointed.

Great vibes, super friendly hosts. Some of them speak mandarin so they explained more and gave us recommendation of sake pairing. It is on the pricier side, fixed menu; overall 5/5 dinning experience.

Tempura Omakase in heart of Honolulu. Everything was freshly fried as it is the best to eat when it’s hot and crispy. The the quality ingredients and friendly service. I have never eaten so many variety tempura. Enjoyed the each piece but I could not help thinking it would have been nice to eat fresh or cooked in a different way especially the ingredients were fresh and good quality. The restaurant was very spacious plenty of space in between the guests, however, it made difficult to talk to friends as we sat apart from each other facing the counter. We were party of four talking to a friend who sat end made it difficult to have a conversation.

Made a reservation through opentable. Overall 10/10 in terms of taste, excellent taste, presentation, and service. The best of what you’d expect of fine dining and service in the top restaurants in Tokyo. The light crispy tempura batter, fresh seafood and vegetables, and aromatic and fragrant oils. Best dishes in this omakase were the snow crab, Hokkaido uni, and shrimp tendon. They were so nice for making a white peach and jelly dessert for our anniversary. About 15 dishes total including desserts. Main thing to consider is that it is pricey at $160/person before tax and tip. So definitely a splurge occasion.

We made reservations here because we love omakase but this was so unique as they offer a tempura omakase. Though most of the meal is fried, the batter is so crispy thin that it never felt heavy and they have palette cleansers throughout the meal that are not fried. The service was excellent and they offer two time slots 5pm or 7pm. The chef is a Michelin chef so it truly did feel like a Michelin experience! Very intimate setting with limited seating. It felt like we were in Japan! Loved every minute of it!
