About
A New Wave of Japanese Comfort in Moiliili
Tane Vegan Izakaya flips the script on traditional Japanese drinking food, proving that you do not need fish to anchor a high-energy izakaya experience. Located in the heart of Honolulu’s vibrant Moiliili neighborhood, this spot specializes in plant-based sushi and small plates that satisfy even the most committed carnivores. The dining room hums with a focused, casual intensity, where the scent of toasted sesame and charred shishito peppers hangs heavy in the air.
The Art of the Plant-Based Roll
Chef-driven innovation is at the forefront here. Instead of relying on mock meats, the kitchen highlights the natural textures of vegetables, fungi, and fermented ingredients. The signature vegan rolls are visually striking, often topped with house-made sauces that provide a necessary acidic punch. If you are a fan of tempura, their vegetable-forward takes achieve that elusive, airy crunch that usually requires a traditional batter.
What to Expect When You Arrive
The space is intentionally intimate, which means it can get quite loud once the dinner rush kicks in. Be prepared for a cozy, elbow-to-elbow social dynamic that encourages sharing multiple plates. While parking in this pocket of Honolulu can be a bit of a localized challenge, the trade-off is a menu that feels genuinely creative rather than just a dietary alternative. It is an ideal spot for those seeking a creative date night or a midweek shift from the usual heavy protein-centric meals found elsewhere on the island. Whether you are strictly vegan or simply curious about vegetable-forward Japanese techniques, Tane offers a refreshing departure from the status quo.

Honestly, this was one of the best vegan sushi meals I’ve had. Everything tasted so fresh, and the rolls were super creative with really nice flavors and textures. And the ube cheesecake—wow—it was ridiculously good. Creamy, rich, and just the perfect way to end the meal. We ended up coming back again the very next day—that’s how good it was.

The question is, what rolls should you get? I recommend a mix of savoury deep fried rolls & refreshing rolls - eg. The Wedge is a delicious tempura fried roll & Kailua is a refreshing roll or Leahi is a very refreshing roll with pickled beets & vegan cream cheese. Mix & match 2 rolls & get a side if you like for two people & you’ll have room for dessert which is not to be missed here! The fun rolls are Sunset which is on fire and Barbers which has a hidden spicy one! Fun for a cute date night Staff are so lovely. Same staff for the past several years, becomes like visiting an old friend everytime I come back to Hawai’i 🌸❤️ Definitely get a reservation here because they get busy! ❤️

Great food. Ordered 2 sushis, gyoza (they were ok), avacado roll and buns. Lovely modern restaurant. The wedge roll was great but other one was good too. Didn’t find much vegan food options in weikiki around royal hawaiian center. So this came quite handy
