Tanaka of Tokyo Central
About
Dinner and a Show in the Heart of Waikiki
Stepping into Tanaka of Tokyo Central feels less like a traditional meal and more like a high-energy performance. Located right in the pulse of Honolulu's busiest shopping district, this teppanyaki staple turns dinner into an interactive art form. You are seated around a flat-top iron grill where the chefs act as both culinary masters and entertainers, expertly tossing shrimp tails and creating iconic onion volcanoes that billow steam into the air.
A Legacy of Sizzling Flavor
Since the restaurant group first launched in 1978, they have mastered the craft of the theatrical Japanese steakhouse. The menu highlights prime cuts of beef, fresh lobster, and scallops seared to order with a signature blend of butter, garlic, and secret seasonings. The air is heavy with the scent of savory soy and searing garlic, a fragrance that defines the experience as much as the food itself.
The Waikiki Experience
This spot is perfect for families celebrating milestones or groups looking for a boisterous, memorable night out. Expect a lively, loud atmosphere—this is not a place for a quiet, whispered conversation. If you are visiting, keep in mind that the central location can get crowded, so arriving a few minutes early to navigate the elevator logistics in the Waikiki Shopping Plaza is a pro tip. Between the synchronized knife work and the fast-paced service, it remains a cornerstone of Oahu dining for those who want their dinner with a side of spectacle.

Dear Management at Tanaka of Tokyo, I am writing to express my extreme disappointment regarding my recent dining experience at your hibachi restaurant. Unfortunately, the evening was a significant letdown. It felt as though the establishment places far more importance on charging customers than on providing quality service. The focus seemed entirely on the bill rather than ensuring a hospitable or enjoyable environment, which is not what I expected from a restaurant of your reputation. I hope you take this feedback into consideration to improve the balance between your pricing and the level of service provided to your guests. Regards, Mihir Patel

We’ve been here several times already and the food is always fresh and delicious. The sushi tastes great, the service is friendly, and the atmosphere is nice and relaxing. Definitely one of our favorite Japanese restaurants in the area. We’ll keep coming back!

We came from Maui and met up with family at this restaurant for dinner. The food was fantastic, and the cocktails were absolutely adorable. Most importantly, we were able to stay and enjoy our meal until after 11 PM. It’s rare to find restaurants in Hawaii that stay open this late, which made the experience even better. We’ll definitely be coming back on our next visit. Highly recommend!

I love this izakaya because everyone is so friendly and the food is absolutely amazing. I’d absolutely kill for their chutoro again even at $15, it was perfect. Their tako wasabi was also excellent, with just the right amount of wasabi. I also loved the tonkatsu, sweet potato tempura, saba, and uni nigiri. Everything was so fresh and flavorful. Their drinks are perfect, and the music was so good too. Definitely one of my favorite spots.

Stopped by Harumi and honestly had such a great experience. The otoro was incredibly fresh, buttery, and literally melted in my mouth. definitely one of my favorite bites of the night. You can really tell the quality of the fish here. The atmosphere is super cozy and welcoming, perfect for hanging out with friends or just enjoying a relaxed dinner in Waikiki. The staff were all so friendly and attentive throughout the night, which made the experience even better. Also, the location is really convenient and easy to find since it’s right on the street in Waikiki. Definitely a spot I’d come back to again!

Had a group dinner at the Waikiki location. As it is the holiday weeks, reservation is needed especially dinner time. Hosted by chef Cyrus. He is very entertaining with his kitchen skills, and jokes. Foods are marvelous. We had a good time to dine and watch chef Cyrus preparing dishes and performing several tricks.

Choosing this Japanese restaurant for a get-together with my girls was absolutely the right decision ✨ The moment we walked in, we were drawn to the ambiance.it’s incredibly warm and cozy, making it the perfect spot to relax, chat, and enjoy each other’s company. The food definitely did not disappoint. Every dish was thoughtfully prepared and truly delicious. The fish, in particular, was extremely fresh—you can really taste the quality in every bite. And I have to give a special shoutout to the drinks: they not only look amazing but taste just as good—refreshing and flavorful! Every moment spent here felt so comfortable and enjoyable. It’s definitely a place I’ll want to come back to again and again ❤️

Jonah was the best hibachi chef my family and I have ever had! He was very fun and personable, and his skills and tricks were incredible. He cooked our proteins perfectly to each person’s liking, and all the other food was good too. Only downside was we had a party of 8 and had to wait about 20 minutes past our reservation time because it was busy. BUT we were given complimentary edamame as a thanks for waiting. Overall, would definitely come back to Tanaka for any celebration or night out.

By far the worst hibachi experience I’ve ever had. The show was mid. the food was bland (I had the teriyaki chicken), and the portions were the worst part. The vegetables are not the vegetables you would expect. You get mushrooms, onions, peppers. You also had to pay 6$ extra for fried rice which was just some garlic and egg. Would not recommend.

First time at Tanaka restaurant in Hawaii . It was lovely. Great service, fresh food and the open grill where they cook in front of you was enjoyable. The chef did some fire tricks etc, great entertainment and atmosphere .
