A Slice of Osaka in Moiliili

Stepping into Takonoki feels less like walking into a Honolulu storefront and more like stumbling upon a hidden street food stall in Dotonbori. The air is heavy with the savory, toasted scent of bonito flakes and sizzling batter. This is the spot for those seeking the authentic crunch of takoyaki—a golden, spherical octopus pancake that is notoriously difficult to master.

Precision in Every Bite

Watching the chefs at work is a rhythmic performance; they rotate the batter-filled molds with lightning-fast metal picks, ensuring each ball achieves a perfectly crispy exterior while remaining molten and creamy on the inside. Unlike many local adaptations that veer toward the soggy, the takoyaki here respects the traditional Osaka texture. Beyond their signature octopus filling, the menu allows for creative toppings that lean into Japanese street food culture, making it an ideal destination for late-night cravings or a casual snack after exploring the Moiliili and McCully corridors.

The Quirk of the Counter

Be prepared for a compact, no-frills environment. There is very little space to linger, and the intense heat coming off the griddles makes it a better spot for quick bites than a long, sit-down meal. The acoustics can get lively, echoing with the sounds of the kitchen staff's shouts and the sizzle of the iron plates. If you are navigating the area, keep in mind that parking in this part of Honolulu can be a tight squeeze, so tucking your car into a nearby public lot is often a smarter play than circling the block. Whether you are a local regular or a visitor seeking a genuine taste of Japan’s comfort food, Takonoki delivers an uncompromising, hot-off-the-iron experience that favors flavor over flair.

The food here is good, but the service was terrible. I brought in two white friends and received service that should have been embarrassing. I had to chase for drinks, food, and the check. Every other pure Japanese table received service, but any table that came in with a Caucasian was similarly ignored.

My favorite Japanese beer drinking joint in Waikiki. Chirimen cabbage and Asari Cabbage, and Sake... DONE!

This is a traditional izakaya. I think some of the reviewers don't understand what an izakaya is supposed to be, but it is pretty authentic. They'll even keep bottles for you for a few months. A small number of the food items are hit and miss, but most of it is quite good. The okonomiyaki is top notch.

Barely above average. Seemingly rushed. I probably could not recommend here only because there are better places only steps away. I some small sausages. Yummy. Yeppannaki chicken. Delicious but not special as the sauce was simple cooked catsup. Lastly had the mixed sashimi and the tiny squid prices stole the show. Duh? You explain that to me please. I did not opt for a full course dinner. Maybe that rocks. Service was very prompt not a second to wait for anything.

Pretty good Japanese izakaya! Decor is traditional Japanese, photos on the wall on the staircase up to the seating area are of Japanese celebrities who have visited before. Japanese cinema posters plaster the walls. Went here after a long day and sat right at the bar. Place was mostly Japanese and Japanese-speaking Americans at the bar I had an interesting chat with. Definitely authentic style izakaya foods, with both Japanese and Hawaiian beers on tap. I opted for the tuna bowl and Kirin. Reasonable prices for the food, and fast and friendly service. It's a bit loud inside, given the bar environment and the number of customers. Good for larger groups, there are large seating areas and tables available!

They charged 6 dollars for them to add an extra tomato because The chef didnt want to serve an extra side and acted like a child. Worst place. Not worth spending money here.
