A Slice of Tokyo in the Heart of Honolulu

Tucked away near the bustling Waikiki corridor, Sushiya offers an unpretentious escape for those seeking high-quality Japanese cuisine without the fanfare of high-end resort dining. The atmosphere is quiet and focused, prioritizing the artistry of the sushi counter over complex decor. You will often find locals sidling up to the bar for a quick, precise meal rather than tourists looking for a multi-hour experience.

The Craft of the Counter

What defines the experience here is the dedication to traditional preparation. The chefs emphasize the quality of the fish, particularly the melt-in-your-mouth hamachi and the expertly seasoned nigiri. Unlike many neighborhood spots that lean heavily on fusion rolls, this kitchen honors the classics, focusing on the texture of the vinegared rice and the temperature of the sashimi. You will smell the faint, clean scent of fresh ginger and soy as you enter, a hallmark of a kitchen that values ingredient integrity.

Local Nuances

Keep in mind that space is at a premium within these walls. The seating is intimate, which contributes to the focused, almost meditative vibe of the room, though it can feel a bit tight during the evening rush. It is the ideal spot for a solo diner or a couple wanting to actually hear each other talk without competing against loud background music. If you are exploring the streets near the Ala Wai Canal, this provides a reliable, grounded contrast to the surrounding high-energy bars and tourist-heavy eateries. It is a genuine neighborhood fixture where the food does the talking, making it a staple for anyone in Honolulu craving a no-nonsense, authentic sushi dinner.

Always delicious, a little pricey but still justified. The nigiri is amazing, and the spicy crunchy ahi is what dreams are made of.

Great sushi spot in Kaimuki. The sushi here is incredibly fresh and full of flavor—it’s clear they take pride in using quality ingredients. The menu offers a great variety, from classic rolls to unique specialty items. The staff is friendly and welcoming, and the service is quick—perfect for a takeout spot. The prices are reasonable, and the portions are generous, making it a great value for the quality you get.

Mom and Pop. I love the shrimp tempura and BLT rolls. (2015 review) Now under new ownership. I don't like the place now. The rice fell apart in my shrimp tempura roll which wasn't the same. They don't have BLT rolls anymore.

Lovley little sushi and poke spot with a quaint atmosphere with Very friendly staff. We got the spicy ahi poke and the sauce actually has a good amount of spice without feeling like a taco bell Diablo packet was mixed in like other places. Would highly recommend 👌

I recently rediscovered Sushiya on Waialae Avenue and it's quickly become my go-to sushi spot in the neighborhood. This family-run gem exudes warmth and hospitality, making each visit a delightful experience. What I love about Sushiya is how convenient it is. There's always easy parking right out front, perfect for those days when I'm in a rush and need a quick grab-and-go option. It's also ideally located for a stop on the way home. Their menu has a great mix of classics and their own special twist on local favorites. My favorites so far are the Crunchy Spicy Ahi Bowl and the Spicy Dynamite Maki - both are packed with flavor and the portions are super generous. Plus, they're currently running a fantastic promotion – $10 off on orders over $40 with an American Savings Bank debit card, which is pretty much a whole free roll every time you visit. If you're looking for a friendly, convenient neighborhood sushi shop with amazing food, Sushiya is the place to go. Can't wait for my next visit!

I had been coming to Sushiya for years before the pandemic. I remember coming to this restaurant as an everyday patron. I've finally come back after some time and got to meet the new owners. They have renovated the place to look very cute and welcoming! The food is just as delicious as I remember and with great display. A great way to spoil yourself for a date. The "crunchy veggie don" is now the "crunchy spicy ahi don," which is a must try and unique version of a pokebowl, which includes sushi rice, vegetable tempura, and spicy ahi. Their sauce is very good, which soaks into the rice for a delicious combination! I was able to get $10 off for spending $40 with an American Savings Bank Debit card, too, so I splurged and got the dynamite maki, too. I liked it even more! Crunchy shrimp tempura with the fresh crunch of the cucumber was a heavenly balance with the spicy ahi on top. Thanks again, Sushiya!! Good luck with your small business!♡ See you again soon!

Tasty stuff! We grabbed some take out and had a picnic at the park across the street (no dine in from Covid). The house sauce is delicious!! No matter what you order, make sure to ask for a side of that sauce! I got some veggie rolls, my friend had a bowl with fresh ahi and vegetable tempura. His bowl was so goooood. The veggie tempura was amaaazing! I can’t comment on the fish as I’m vegetarian, but if I go back I’m definitely gonna try to order the same bowl my friend did without the fish.
