Island-Style Low and Slow

Finding authentic Texas-style barbecue in the middle of the Pacific might seem like a tall order, but Sunset Smokehouse delivers a genuine smoke-kissed experience right here in Honolulu. Stepping inside, the air is thick with the scent of post oak and rendered fat, a stark departure from the typical salt-air breeze of the islands. The sound of a heavy cleaver hitting the cutting board acts as the soundtrack for your meal, signaling that the brisket—the undisputed king of the menu—is being sliced to order.

The Pitmaster's Craft

This is where patience meets flavor. The pitmasters here treat their craft with a reverence usually reserved for the heart of the Lone Star State. You will find the signature brisket sporting a dark, peppery bark that yields to a tender, melt-in-your-mouth center. Pair it with their house-made pickles or the tangy, vinegar-forward sides that cut through the richness of the meat. Whether you are a local craving something heartier than poke or a traveler seeking a taste of home, the menu leans heavily into tradition with generous platters designed for sharing.

A Note on the Smokehouse Flow

The space is unpretentious and geared toward those who prioritize food quality over fancy interiors. Be prepared for a casual, counter-service setup that keeps things moving during the lunch rush. It can get quite cozy inside, especially when the lines start forming out the door, so don't be shy about sharing a picnic table with a neighbor. The parking situation nearby can be a bit of a puzzle in this bustling part of the city, so planning for a short walk is a smart move before you settle in for your meat-heavy feast.

IYKYK. This is not good BBQ! If they say it is then their mouths are broken and it wasn't the food that broke them lol. This is not an angry review. It's simply to inform and warn others on what to expect. You can compare the pictures to my descriptions. This was probably some of the worst BBQ I've tried. If you like cornbread, DONT ORDER THE CORNBREAD! It was covered with powdered sugar lol. I took one bite and realized it was mochi, corn mochi with a smidge of cornbread flavor and chunks of corn kernels. The brisket was a little below average. Slightly decent flavor, not bad, but sliced into chunks with a huge strip of fat in the middle of every piece (check my pics). It was almost all fat. The bark was extremely salty and it reminded me of a poorly cooked pot roast meat. The ribs tasted like they were freezer burned. They were dry and the only flavor they did have was from the sauce on them. The regular barbq sauce tasted like a mild tomato sauce with a hint of ketchup tang. The hot bbq sauce tasted the same, but with an added buffalo wing flavor. I ended up using my own barbecue sauce from the fridge since this was take out. The rice was the typical rice, nothing special, sticky white rice from a rice cooker. The white bread had a sour dirt aftertaste like it was stored in container with mold in it, but that's expected from cheap gmo bread. The sides weren't very good either. The creamed corn was thick and very sweet. It tasted like cool whip or tapioca with corn. The potato salad was not your typical potato salad. It was small red potatoes that were cubed, undercooked and coated with a watery mustard dill dressing. The coleslaw and beans were the only sides that were ok, but they were bland. All in all it was a very disappointing experience. Maybe we went on an off day and this place is usually better. I highly doubt it though lol. Makes me think all these people from Austin giving good reviews haven't had good BBQ. Or BBQ sucks in Austin too lmao. The two of us didn't eat much of the food. Look at my pictures. My GF only took a few bites and said it was inedible. She's from Houston so her BBQ standards are much higher than mine. I would love to be wrong and say I had some really good BBQ, but I honestly don't know if good barbecue exists in Hawaii. Or at least I haven't found anything good on Kauai or Oahu yet in 17 years. This was a $62 lesson that I will never repeat.

I absolutely loved this place. The meat was incredible — everything was juicy, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. You can really taste the quality and care that goes into the food. The service was truly 5-star. Everyone was so welcoming, friendly, and open, which made the whole experience even better. This is the kind of spot you leave already thinking about coming back. Highly recommend if you love great Texas BBQ!

Texas born person here. Unlike the Charlene person over here , I am not an envious person and I give my honest review. The brisket was pretty good. Way better brisket than Terry Black's from Austin. The sides were good, too, but I wish the potato salad had more mustard and pickles. If this was sold in Texas, it would be an absolute hit. This place is a hidden gem in Honolulu. The best restaurant in Honolulu for sure.
