A Taste of Island Comfort

Tucked away in the vibrant streets of Honolulu, Sunny’s Local Grind serves as a sanctuary for those craving authentic Hawaiian plate lunches. The space carries an unpretentious, open-air energy where the clatter of takeout containers meets the smell of slow-roasted kalua pork hitting the air. It is the kind of spot where the humidity of the islands meets the savory, heavy comfort of soul food.

Menu Staples and Island Flavors

The kitchen prides itself on traditional preparations. You will find generous portions of loco moco topped with rich, dark gravy and eggs cooked to your preference, alongside crispy chicken katsu that maintains its crunch even under a blanket of tangy sauce. The mac salad here acts as the true barometer of quality—creamy, chilled, and perfectly balanced with a touch of black pepper. It is a no-frills experience designed for locals grabbing a quick lunch break or visitors looking to skip the tourist traps.

The Honolulu Experience

Expect a casual environment where efficiency is the name of the game. Seating is sparse and often fills up quickly during the midday rush, so be prepared to share a table or grab your styrofoam container to enjoy at a nearby park. While the tight parking lot can be a minor hurdle for those navigating the bustling city traffic, the aroma of smoked meat and steamed white rice makes the maneuvering well worth the effort. Whether you are a long-time resident or just passing through, this kitchen delivers the kind of honest, hearty food that defines the local palate.

What a cute little place! ☀️ We stopped in on their birthday celebration and had a great experience. The line was out the door, but after eating there, I can see why—it's very popular! 🎉☕ I tried the Ube Coffee, and even my husband—who isn't usually into drinks like that—really liked it. 💜 For food, I got the Garbage Can, and it was absolutely delicious. But my favorite was the potato pasta salad. What a genius idea! 🥔🍝 Two of my favorite sides combined into one, and it worked perfectly. I ate the whole thing! If you're looking for a fun local spot with delicious food and a great atmosphere, this place is definitely worth the wait! 😋🌺

Aloha!! We got the new hot honey chicken biscuit, tots, potato mac, almond croissant and banana bread latte. Coffee was great and not too sweet but just right. The food was hot and fresh and delish! We ate in and grabbed something to go for a friend. The workers were so sweet and because we waited so long for our to-go order, they apologized and gave us a little pastry on the house :) seating is limited so be ready to hunt for one.

Stayed nearby and decided to come after reading reviews. Limited seating but don't let that stop you from visiting! They have delicious food at very reasonable prices. Loved their loco moco' and breakfast burrito.

This place stays very busy. There is alwasy a line. We wanted to check it out for a local dish that they serve called a loco moco. Although the line was long it moved at a steady pace. The staff was pleasant. There is no like "service" for the tables you order then you seat yourself (if there is room) but they do bring out your food if you find a seat b/c it's so small inside not everyone can wait in there. We both ordered the beef Loco Moco. It comes with the egg sunny up but I asked for it to be over med with yole still runny, only b/c when I saw someone else's the white part of the egg around the yoke looked undone. And they said they would try to accommodate that request. We sat outside in a patio area that they have. Now mind you this place in tiny. Only one area to sit inside that may sit like 4 sets of 2 ppl or a group of 4 and 2 couples. But if you're not there early that is gone or you have to wait. Outside is about the same maybe a tiny bit bigger. May seat a total of 10 couples. We did get a seat outside which was great and there were 3 of us. With enough room for about 4 more ppl at our table. The tables were picnic style that you would see at the park only one side was bench like. The food was really good it was my first time having it. Loco Moco is just rice with black beans and a meat and egg on top. Doesn't look like anything I would order, but my coworker said it is very good and it really was. It was not anything I ever thought to eat all together, but glad I tried it. The only think I didn't like is that there were 3 of us and we all ordered right behind each other, but my food came out so late. My coworker was almost done by time I got my food. The server stated it was b/c an online order came in, but I think that it unfair to the ppl who are physically there waiting on their food that they push the order to the side to fill the online order. There should be a separate service for online orders and not cut off the ppl who have ordered already and are actually waiting for their food. It should at least be taken after the last in person order was put through not cut in fro t of an order that has already be placed. That was my only gripe and the reason I took off one star So I do recommend you eat hear just go about 30mins before you want to eat b/c there may be a line and they close early since it is a breafast/brunch place.

Stopped by for breakfast at Sunny's after seeing all the great reviews and was not disappointed! The food was delicious. We got the Sunny's Loco Moco, the biscuits and gravy with sausage, and the fresh squeezed lemonade with passion fruit syrup. Everything tasted great, staff was super friendly and upbeat, and everything came out pretty quickly. So glad we found this little spot during our visit.

This is a great spot with incredible service! The employees are excited to help and share their favorites with you. There is limited seating, so be prepared to take it away to eat. Great coffee and vibes! Plus, dog friendly!

I think I lucked out on this. So we actually were supposed to eat at Aloha Kitchen (read my review on them) but wound up coming here instead. So this turned out to be a WIN. The hostess was really nice and attentive, even though she was very busy. Food was awesome. I had the Brekkie Burrito with Spam. It was great. We sat outside and had a good time in the fresh air. Highly recommended and the rating is legit. 👍

Similarly to a food truck but with a shop front. Breakfast was served to me in a paper takeaway container with plastic knife & fork. They could serve on plates with real cutlery which would lift the experience (perhaps they are too lazy or no dishwashing steriliser). Overall, very below average watery coffee. Food was tasty however let down by presentation in a takeaway container. Disappointing overall compared to online expectations & reviews. Service was friendly & lots of locals.

Ordered Kimchi Fried Rice with Pork Belly and Avocado- slightly sweet, gently spicy (warm? Not hot really at all), fresh kimchi, excellent flavor. Hubs got the breakfast burrito which he called, “actually possibly the best breakfast burrito I have ever had.” He’s eaten a lot of burritos… so. Kiddos split the burger and we all munched on fries and tots. We ordered ahead and waltzed through the front door after we confirmed our order. (But not after entering into Aloha Kitchen first and completely confusing the staff there but we went a different day and you should also eat there because 🤌🏽 it’s also amazing but different than Sunny’s!). Also some of the best fries and potato mac salad I have ever had. This place doesn’t have a lot of indoor seating (not a problem because… it’s Oahu. Go outside, it’s likely beautiful) but every ounce of food is packed with flavor. Just amazing.

We had the brekkie burrito with spam. It was good. The biscuits and gravy with Portuguese sausage and mushrooms was delicious!
