Slurp-Worthy Bowls in the Heart of Honolulu
Finding a reliable spot for a quick lunch in Honolulu often leads locals to the casual, unassuming counters of Sumo Ramen. Located right in the thick of the city’s urban bustle, this eatery focuses on the essentials: steaming broth, springy noodles, and satisfying toppings that hit the spot without any unnecessary flair.
The Flavor Profile
The kitchen leans into traditional Japanese comfort food. Their signature shoyu ramen features a clear, savory base that balances salty soy notes with a depth of umami. If you prefer something with more weight, the miso-based bowls offer a thicker texture that clings to the noodles, providing a hearty meal perfect for a breezy afternoon near the coast. You will smell the savory aroma of slow-simmered pork bone broth as soon as you step through the entrance.
What to Expect
This is a no-frills, utilitarian space where the focus is entirely on getting food from the kitchen to your table quickly. It is an ideal stop for solo diners or office workers needing a fast, affordable bowl between errands in downtown Honolulu. Don't go expecting white-tablecloth service; instead, anticipate a high-energy environment where the clinking of spoons against ceramic bowls creates a rhythmic, ambient soundtrack. Keep in mind that seating can get quite tight during the peak lunch rush, and you might find yourself sharing a table or navigating narrow aisles. It is the kind of neighborhood joint that prides itself on consistency over pretense, serving up reliable bowls of noodles for those who prioritize taste above all else.

I've been here for 10 years, I always come for a bowl of ramen, they have the very good seafood ramen, and my family like their chicken, spring rolls! I never try the curry because for me, the ramen is enough! It's the small tables along the wall and the kitchen are so hot, no air, no wonder I sweat like hell whenever they seat me there, but if it is not 2 or more people, of course I understand, I cant ask you for a bigger dinner table, right? It's just, please think about the hot air inside, maybe consider a fan? Thank you!

Yummy . I'm typically more of a west indian , or even indian , curry girl - theirs also makes the cut ! Best curry I've had on island so far , & the auntie & uncle working up front are super sweet ♡ I always order the mini katsu curry ( spicy ) with the gyoza 🥟 They pair great together . Cant go wrong with it . Highly recommend 🤙🏽

Ordered takeout on Uber Eats, my curry was warm and delicious. I loved the semi-sweet sauce. Dumplings were great and came with sauce. Ramen was good for the combo meal. Would recommend, especially for the price 👌🏽

Flavorful dishes. Small spot in the back of the main shopping center. Takeout only. It’s very small. 2/27/22. Came for late night. So cheap and cheap

This place is unassuming but if you're hungry for fast food ramen/curry, this is the place. It is affordable and no-nonsense. It is also always warm inside if you dine in. I always get the curry udon. Mochiko chicken is also one you can't go without. Also on a side note: my stomach always hurts afterwards. I'm not sure why, maybe cause i overindulge or maybe there's a particular ingredient my stomach doesn't like. Either way, I always say I won't return but.....I do. Parking is in the shopping center.
