St Louis Delicatessen
About
A Taste of Traditional Deli Culture in Kaimuki
When the craving for a heavy, no-nonsense sandwich hits while exploring the streets of Kaimuki, St. Louis Delicatessen stands as a local landmark. This isn’t the place for frills or white-tablecloth service; it’s an authentic, grab-and-go hub that feels like a time capsule of classic deli culture in Honolulu.
What’s Cooking Behind the Counter
The magic here is in the simplicity of their cold cuts and the reliable crunch of fresh-baked bread. They are best known for their generous, piled-high pastrami and corned beef stacks that don’t shy away from the mustard. You’ll hear the rhythmic sound of the meat slicer humming as staff prep orders for the lunch rush, filling the air with the savory aroma of cured meats and tangy pickles. It is the kind of straightforward, high-quality fuel that makes for a perfect picnic at nearby Kapiolani Park.
Navigating Your Visit
Keep in mind that space is at a premium, and during peak hours, you might find yourself waiting on the sidewalk while the small shop processes a steady stream of regulars. The limited seating confirms its status as a local favorite rather than a tourist trap. It’s an ideal stop for residents or travelers looking to skip the hotel buffets and support a neighborhood staple that values portion size and flavor over elaborate presentations. Whether you are grabbing a quick bite before heading up to the University of Hawaii or stocking up for a weekend hike, the consistency here is why locals keep returning.

Update: I’m sorry I didn’t update this review sooner. Evidently, they must’ve read my review and changed back to the original recipe because the chow function is back to the ono white type like from the previous owner. Also, the gal working behind the counter is so friendly and helpful. Previous review: New owners now. Still great service. Ono fried chicken, cone sushi. But, shucks, the white chow fun has changed. I think they cook it differently and maybe using a different chow fun noodle. Used to be the only place I could get the white chow fun. 😢

I come to the place every chance I get. I love their tofu, fried fish, chow fun, long rice, shoyu chicken, etc. You should judge for yourself. Unfortunately, they are only open Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. They close when they run out. Also, their prices, compared to other okazu-ya places are very low. I've been going there for decades. Check um out 🤙🏽

Used to be pretty good. I downgraded a star because the chow fun tastes of garlic. I love garlic, but it is not part of the flavor profile of old-school okazuya style chow fun.

Best damn okazuya in town period! Simple menu and still cheap. Last of the Mohicans. 3/27/21 St. Louis Okazuya, kicks it big time! Best, cheapest okazuya in town. 7a - to 1p - or when they run out, Wed - Sat. I'd go before 10:30am. Just saying... 4/21/21 Pre-workout ritual - musubi, luncheon meat, 3 fried chix. Who serves luncheon meat anymore? They do! 6/16/22 Still, one of yhe best deals in town, hands down! Got my weekly fix on this morning. 😋🤙✌️ 10/2022 Yuuum! 😁🤙✌️ (And I've been a lot more often than these reviews)) 😉) 12/2022 Still kicking. They changed their chow fun and prices have certainly increased. Time will tell but still a great place to get your okazuya fix. 😉🤙✌️

I love this little shop! It reminds of being at my grandma's home. My favorite is the fried chicken and the chow funn! The plain musubis are yummy too.

The à la carte menu is fantastic. As a first-timer, the cashier kindly offered recommendations, and I'm glad they did because the fried fish with tartar sauce became my favorite. The turnip was lovely as well. I also love how this place is incredibly budget-friendly.

Japanese okazuya style food. 3 plates purchased combination of Chowfun, plain musubi, fried and shoyu chicken, hotdog, corn beef hash patty, side order of vegetable tempura, nishime & maki sushi. Was ono and filled our hungers.

Wow, I'm surprised I didn't have to break the bank at this okazuya! The food was so ONO!!! They have the basics, nothing too extravagant, but enough to have good variety. Because I'd have to travel before eating I ordered 2 plates. 1st was the "wet" foods 2nd was the "dry" foods, I almost ordered 1 of everything available. 3 reasons for the 4 star rate: The hash patties were dry I guess because its mostly potato, I prefer traditional えぴ shrimp tempura, and TBH I was craving the square egg omelet but they didn't have any egg dishes nor did they have なますnamasu. The にしめ nishime was cooked through yet it was nice and firm and served in it's sauce, the tofu was great, and the shoyu chicken was juicy. But the fried chicken, OMG the fried chicken! It is now in my top 10 list! There was a misunderstanding, unfortunately I didn't get to try one of my favorite dishes, long rice. I'll be back very soon!
