Southern Love
About
A Slice of the Deep South on Oahu
Walking into Southern Love feels like stepping off the busy streets of Honolulu and into a slow-paced kitchen in Georgia. The air is thick with the scent of simmering collard greens and the sweet, caramelized aroma of cornbread pulled straight from the oven. This spot has carved out a unique identity by bringing genuine comfort food to a city better known for poke and plate lunches.
What to Expect
The kitchen prides itself on scratch-made classics. The fried chicken is the undeniable star here, boasting a golden, shatteringly crisp skin that yields to succulent, seasoned meat. Pair it with their creamy, velvet-textured mac and cheese, which balances just enough sharp cheddar tang with a decadent, buttery finish. It is the kind of food that demands you slow down and savor the moment.
The Atmosphere
You won't find white tablecloths or stiff service here. The dining room reflects the laid-back, community-centric spirit of the islands mixed with Southern hospitality. It is a space designed for messy, finger-licking meals, whether you are stopping by for a quick lunch or settling in for a hearty dinner with friends. Be aware that the space is compact, so during peak island lunch hours, the hum of conversation can get quite spirited. Parking in the immediate vicinity can be a bit of a puzzle, but locals know that the trade-off for perfectly seasoned brisket and authentic peach cobbler is well worth the extra walk.
Why Choose This Honolulu
If you are craving a departure from the usual island fare, Southern Love delivers a bold, soulful experience that feels personal. The chefs emphasize traditional techniques, resulting in a menu that feels less like a commercial kitchen production and more like a Sunday afternoon family dinner. Whether you are a local resident looking for a flavor shift or a traveler missing the comforts of home, this kitchen provides a genuine, unpretentious retreat.

The food reminds me of my home in the south. The fish and fries tasted ok. The sauce was great. I guess I expected more spice on the actual fish. I feel like the crust took away from the seasoning. The fries were regular degular. The mac tasted like love. The seasoning and that lasagna pulled cheese on it was awesome!! We waited a long time (1hr and 3 minutes) for our food but they were short handed. There was a group of 8 people there. They seemed to be more attentive to them. NOT MAD but just didn’t get the same treatment as they did. Vibe was ok, the music really brought out the vibe. Would recommend if you are gonna put in an order come early and know what you want. Btw, parking was slightly difficult.

We visited with a group and got a little bit of everything, Including the desserts. Every single dish had its own unique, incredible flavor. You can really taste the love and care put into this food. It felt so wholesome and comforting. While the kitchen took a little time to get the food out, it was absolutely worth the wait because everything was served perfectly. Definitely recommend, and we already can't wait to come back for brunch!

This restaurant is an absolute gem. Sitting at the counter feels warm and personal, like enjoying a meal in a friend’s kitchen. The owners and their family are incredibly kind and welcoming, which makes the experience even more special. The food is comforting and full of flavor—the shrimp po’ boy was outstanding, and the fried chicken with gravy was rich, crispy, and satisfying. The cozy atmosphere and genuine hospitality make this place stand out. It’s wonderful to have authentic soul food like this in town. I can’t recommend this spot enough and will definitely be back.
