So Gong Dong Restaurant
About
A Fiery Korean Staple in the Heart of Honolulu
When the craving for bubbling, stone-pot comfort hits while you are roaming near the Ala Moana corridor, So Gong Dong delivers exactly what you need. This is not a place for white-tablecloth pretense; it is a straightforward, no-nonsense kitchen dedicated to the art of Korean tofu stew. The space hums with the metallic clatter of spoons against earthenware bowls and the faint, savory aroma of fermented kimchi and charred galbi wafting from the kitchen.
The Signature bubbling Experience
The star of the show here is the soon tofu, served in heavy, searing-hot stone pots that continue to boil long after they reach your table. You will hear the hiss of the broth before you see it. The soft, pillowy tofu acts as a canvas for a broth that balances intense spice with a deep, earthy umami. Many locals swear by the seafood combination, which comes packed with clams and shrimp that sweeten the fiery soup. Be prepared for the side dishes, or banchan, which arrive in a quick succession of small plates, offering a crunchy, pickled counterpoint to the heat of the main event.
What to Expect
The interior is modest and functional, making it a favorite for solo diners and groups looking for a hearty, quick lunch or a late-night fix. It is the kind of neighborhood spot where the service is brisk and focused on getting that piping hot pot in front of you as fast as possible. One quirk to note: the space is compact, so expect a cozy experience during the dinner rush when the room fills with the sounds of conversation and clinking metal chopsticks. Whether you are a regular or a first-time visitor, So Gong Dong provides an authentic taste of Korean soul food that stands as a reliable pillar of Honolulu's diverse dining scene.

Delicious. We had the seafood jjigae, haemul pajeon, and mandoo. Everything, including the ban chan, was great. We will be back.

We both got original soondubu and corvina combo. The soup was on the thicker side (which I like), it came with a whole raw egg giving an authentic experience. Corvina fish was crispy but meaty, I really enjoyed it. Banchan was good. The place is really clean and not too tight.

Moved to the neighborhood so thought to check it out. Heard many good things about this place. Food was home style and very tasty! Lady server was very nice. Lots of banchan (side dishes)! My other half really liked this place!
