A Peaceful Escape in the Heart of Honolulu

Tucked away near the bustling thoroughfares of Honolulu, Simple Joy Vegetarian Cuisine offers a quiet respite for those seeking plant-based nourishment. This spot is a local favorite for anyone craving hearty, meat-free versions of classic Asian comfort foods. Upon walking in, the atmosphere is refreshingly unpretentious, with the faint, comforting aroma of ginger and soy-marinated proteins greeting you at the door.

What to Expect on the Menu

The kitchen leans heavily into skillful mock-meat preparations that satisfy even the most committed carnivores. You shouldn’t leave without trying the popular vegetarian pho; the broth is surprisingly deep and aromatic, simmered with star anise and cinnamon, providing a warmth that lingers. The crispy orange 'chicken' is another standout, featuring a perfect balance of citrus tang and a satisfying crunch that makes you forget you aren't eating poultry.

The Experience

It is the kind of place where you go to refuel after a day of exploring the island. The dining area is modest and efficient, though the acoustics can get a bit lively during the weekday lunch rush when local office workers pack the tables. It is best suited for a casual, no-fuss meal where the priority is fresh ingredients and bold seasoning. Parking can be a bit of a challenge in this part of town, so plan to spend a few extra minutes scouting a spot. Whether you are a dedicated vegan or just looking for a lighter, flavor-forward meal in the city, Simple Joy delivers consistent, belly-warming satisfaction without the heavy price tag often found in tourist districts.

A date of mine is vegan and recommend we try this place and off we went. While parking is a pain I understand it given the lack of space in town but if the you don't miss the lot and it's not packed it's not bad but if it's either of the former and especially the latter it's gonna be a pain especially without backup cameras and sensors. Overall the food made up for it. Despite the hole in the wall vibe I got it his place had quite an expansive menu and I loved the variety in genres of food on offer. We ended up splitting everything which was: gyoza, puttanesca pasta, and chicken pesto masala. All of which tasted amazing with good texture and seasoning which is what I think is needed in a place especially with no meat on the menu. Everything came out fast, was big and made us quite content. Where I have a slight problem with is the pricing. The entrees were each $21 bucks and while heaping I do wish it was at least 17-19 instead those couple bucks make a difference over time. Though I'd definitely give this place a go moving forward to try out the rest of the menu. Places like this make me hopeful more people will give the diet a good go as it haves much more benefits than just the environment!

Delicous, made to order, Vegan meals. Quiet location with a vast menu. Server very polite, suggesting food items while explaining others. Broccoli, Tofu, Sicilian Chicken Pasta, Lemongrass Tofu, Strawberry Smoothie, Avocado/Banana Smoothie. Everything was flavorful, walked away full. The parking lot is small, however there is parking options near by.

If you are in Waikiki near resorts and looking for a vegan or vegetarian food. This is a place to go with in 3 miles and 15 minutes drive by car. I explored almost all restaurants in Kalakaua mall area but couldn’t find anything vegetarian or vegan that is appealing. Simple Joy has an elaborate fusion vegan menu. Although most of the dishes are from Asian cuisine ( Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese) but I also found Italian (pastas) interesting. We ordered Spring Roll, Joy Noodles Soup and Vegetable Bolognese w/ Penne Pasta. All food items were tasty and filling. Prices are reasonable considering this is a tourist place. It looks like it is a popular destination as almost all tables were full with people from different ethnicities. Server Kevin was friendly. Addendum: After searching more options finally went twice again to the same place and Ordered Kung Pow Wow ( Not an authentic Thai flavour but OK), Vegetable Balognese( 2nd time ordered as my wife loved it), Tomyum Soup ( Authentic Thai Soup - Really Loved it), Eggplant Tofu (Good healthy veggie dish) and Chow Fun ( Fusion of Chow Mein and Pad Thai - Liked it especially due to a lot of veggies and Chinese flavours on flat Rice Noodles). Highly recommend this small family owned business run by a family members serving healthy and tasty food in this highly competitive tourist hub.

Amazing food! Great service! We’re also able to find parking for Saturday lunch time. The restaurant had plenty of tables. The place is dated but don’t let it deter you from trying it otherwise you’ll miss out! Items that we tried and loved - curry noodle soup - tasted like laksa with fried tofu and veggies. Full of flavor. Amazing! Pho - delicious simple broth, good noodles with lots of veggies. Beef chow fun with gravy - well-charred noodles with good smoky and peppery flavor, beef mock meat tasted fine (not weird), lots of veggies. Banana flower salad - yummy, minty, sweet, umami, next time I’d ask for a side of peanuts. Definitely would be back. Can’t wait to try all the other items on the menu!

Surprisingly tasty dishes from this tiny eatery. The mock fish plate was really good (despite being a bit too sweet). The curry noodles was quite good as well.

This is fantastic place for vegetarians & vegans! We ordered spring rolls, potstickers, curry noodles, yellow curry with rice (which seemed very similar to curry noodles), Veg Fried rice. All the dishes were extremely flavorful & fresh! The sauces were very different & very yummy. I wish we had found it on day 1. We would have gone a few more times. Missed taking pictures of maun course because we were enjoying our appetizers.

Food was absolutely delicious and served timely. This is a great place for vegetarian/ vegan food. A lot of options available here. We were satisfied with all the dishes we ordered. Vegetables are the star here. I will recommend everyone to go there and I hope that I get to visit this place one more time during my trip

Family-owned, affordable, nondescript but incredibly tasty restaurant. My favorite vegan spot in Hawaii. It’s too bad so few people are in whenever we visit; they deserve more recognition. I brought my grandmother here weeks ago; she’s run a catering business for decades, and is very picky about restaurant food. Though she isn’t vegan, she gave this place 2 thumbs up! Must try’s: mushroom linguine, curry noodle, pumpkin soup, sugar cane juice
