A Local Honolulu Institution

Stepping into Side Street Inn feels like walking into the city’s unofficial living room. Tucked away from the high-rise glamour of Waikiki, this casual haunt in the Kaka'ako area is where local chefs go to eat after their own shifts end. The air is thick with the savory, caramelizing scent of garlic and soy, while the dining room hums with the clatter of heavy plates hitting communal tables.

The Legendary Flavor Profiles

You cannot talk about this landmark without mentioning the pork chops. Served bone-in and pan-fried to a golden, salt-crusted perfection, they are the main reason people brave the occasionally chaotic parking lot. The menu focuses on elevated island comfort food, featuring heapings of kimchi fried rice and furikake-crusted chicken that beg to be shared among a large group. This is not a place for white-tablecloth etiquette; it is a place for beer pitchers, boisterous laughter, and passing plates until everyone is full.

The Kaka'ako Experience

Expect a high-energy environment. It can get loud—sometimes deafeningly so during a televised game—but that is part of the charm. Whether you are a visitor trying to find the authentic pulse of Oʻahu or a local grabbing a late-night feast, the service is brisk and straightforward. If you arrive during peak dinner hours, be prepared to wait, as the island crowd flocks here for the sheer volume of food and the lack of pretension. It remains a quintessential piece of Honolulu dining culture, rewarding those who navigate the industrial outskirts to find it.

If you are looking for local Hawai'ian flavors, this is a great way to try some. The portions are huge so bring a friend to share with, but also a good way to have leftovers for a few days if you're feeding just yourself.

My wife, our friends, and I absolutely love everything about Side Street Inn. The food is consistently outstanding, the service is friendly and attentive, and the live music adds such a fun, lively energy to the experience. Every visit feels welcoming and memorable. This is truly a must-try restaurant—and even more so, a must-return. We’ll keep coming back again and again!

We went there on Tuesday about 6p. We made reservations... worth it because it was busy. Parking really sucks...valet, street & surrounding structure parking. There was live music... awesome. Our server was good. I cannot remember the name of my cocktail, but it was good. We ordered... fried rice (good)... garlic fries (love)... pork chops (tasty but dry)... garlic chicken (good flavor but should cut to smaller pieces). Serving was decent but pricing on the high side.

I was recommended by a colleague and boy did this not disappoint! We walked in and the there is a joyous atmosphere with a singer playing not too loud so everyone can laugh. Shout out to the bartender who was inviting and engaging with his bar. The food is AMAZING, we had the Garlic Chicken and Fried rice is so good. The only “good” problem is that not only is it affordable especially in the current economy there is SO MUCH FOOD! I shared with my colleague and we still had plenty of food leftover! Only suggestion is if you are going with a group, reserve ahead! This is a popular spot and deserves that spot. I will always go back to this place when I go back to the island!

Side Street is and will always be one of our favorite spots in Honolulu. The prices really match the portions, super generous. For 4 people, we ordered the pork chops, spicy chicken (it's not spicy), fried rice, and mac salad - and we brought home leftovers! The spicy chicken is my favorite, no idea how they get it so tender and crispy and flavorful. The fried rice is very nostalgic, and I love their mac salad. Parking can be tough. Valet is $8, or there are QR scan lots and garages nearby, or you can Lyft if you're visiting. Staff are always so warm and welcoming, and we had no trouble getting seated at 6pm on a Tuesday. For 4 people with beers and 4 dishes, the total came out to around $140.
