A Taste of Tokyo in Kaimuki

Stepping into Sho's Kitchen feels less like dining out and more like pulling up a chair in a friend's home kitchen. Tucked away in the Kaimuki neighborhood of Honolulu, this spot has built a loyal following for its no-frills approach to Japanese comfort food. The space is intimate, often buzzing with the rhythmic clatter of pans and the warm, savory scent of dashi simmering on the stove.

Mastering the Art of Donburi

Chef Shoji Nomura keeps the menu tight, focusing on elevated versions of daily staples. The signature deep-fried pork cutlet, or tonkatsu, is the star here—lightly breaded with a crunch that gives way to tender, juicy meat. Whether you choose it served over a steaming bowl of rice as a katsudon or alongside a crisp cabbage salad, the precision is evident. The menu rotates based on what looks best at the markets, keeping regulars on their toes with seasonal specials that highlight local Hawaiian ingredients through traditional Japanese techniques.

The Neighborhood Experience

Don't expect a polished, white-tablecloth affair. The floor plan is compact, and during the dinner rush, the energy inside can get quite high-spirited. It is the kind of place where you might find yourself shoulder-to-shoulder with locals grabbing a quick, high-quality bite after work. If you plan on driving, give yourself a few extra minutes to navigate the street parking around the block, as spots in this part of Honolulu fill up fast. It is a genuine, unpretentious retreat for anyone craving soul-warming food that avoids the gimmicks found in larger tourist corridors.

Go now. We had heard about Sho's Kitchen online and made it a point to stop by for a take home dinner. Great flavor and huge portions. Great local business. Delicious Chicken Nanban.

The chef makes amazing bento! I tried the Hire Katsu Bento (Pork Tenderloin Katsu) from the August Monthly Special Menu. The bento came with rice, salad, and side dishes. Each component of the dish went well together and had great flavor. The katsu was juicy and crispy, and the portions were filling and certainly worth the price! Compliments to the chef and his wife who take time to talk to their customers and make them feel at home. The restaurant is located on the second floor and has nice two person balcony seating. If you’re looking for authentic bento in Honolulu, Sho’s Kitchen is the place to go!

Our to go bento place in Waikiki. They offer high quality Japanese home style cuisines at reasonable price. Chicken Nanban (fried chicken with tartar sauce) is my favorite.
