Shichimusubi
About
A Taste of Japanese Comfort Near Waikiki
Tucked away in the heart of Honolulu, Shichimusubi brings the meticulous craft of Japanese rice balls to the islands. If you are wandering through the Waikiki area looking for a quick, soul-satisfying snack, this is your go-to spot. The smell of freshly steamed, high-quality Japanese rice greets you the moment you step inside, instantly differentiating this shop from the standard quick-service counters found elsewhere in the city.
Crafting the Perfect Musubi
The shop focuses on the nuance of texture. Each musubi is wrapped in crisp, premium nori that provides a sharp snap before you reach the fluffy, slightly seasoned rice within. Their menu leans into traditional profiles, with fillings ranging from classic salted salmon to savory umeboshi. You can feel the intention behind every fold—these aren't mass-produced items; they are hand-formed with care.
It is worth noting that space is limited. The storefront is quite compact, making it better suited for grabbing a meal to-go for a beach picnic rather than settling in for a long lunch. Because they focus on freshness, their most popular varieties do occasionally sell out before the end of the day, so arriving during mid-morning is a smart local strategy.
Why It Fits the Honolulu Food Scene
Shichimusubi fills a specific void in the local culinary landscape. While Honolulu is famous for its distinct take on Spam musubi, this establishment pivots back to the traditional Japanese roots of the snack. The atmosphere is quiet and functional, appealing to travelers craving an authentic bite that avoids the heavy grease or deep-frying common in nearby tourist-heavy dining districts. Whether you are prepping for a hike or just need a light, balanced fuel source, the straightforward, clean flavors found here hit the mark.

This is BEST rice I have ever tasted in my life. Yes, I am reviewing RICE. They have signs that promote seven heaven qualities of their rice and their rice is indeed heavenly. I would travel all the way from anywhere in the world to Waikiki just to have these musubis. They are that good. Each grain of rice is separate and not mushy or sticky. Each grain of rice slides of each other. I bought a few for next morning and they tasted just as good right out of the fridge. Try doing that with your own cooked rice.

The best Spam Musubi I've ever had! The prices are extremely fair. There is usually a line up so the Musubi is always fresh. The service is fast and courteous. Highly recommend!

As far as an onigiri (omusubi?) place goes, this place is terrible value. It was ok; not amazingly flavourful or innovative in product range. The ume/plum omusubi I got was small (misleading in size, it was 2 dimensionally flat), poorly packaged (the plastic 'pull' tab didn't work and just broke, leaving me to undo their logo sticker and pushing the rice ball out the bottom of the plastic packaging), only had half an ume plum inside and I had to buy the nori separately for 70c + tax. It's actually quite funny. It came in a separate plastic package. Which, apart from this whole process being terrible for the environment, seeing as I was eating-in, but they failed at every aspect of the product. Product - fail. Packaging - fail. Flavour - fail. Experience of using the product - fail. Value of the product - fail. Oh, that staff was okay - but only one person and they were far too busy trying to do everything. Poor staffer. Anyway, in summary, don't go here. There are better options for an omusubi around.

Such delicious musubi. My favorite is the salmon ikura. Perfect for a quick snack or a lunch with multiple choices. Made fresh and the staff is so courteous.

Organic rice, from Japan. They have the best musubi I ever tasted. I recommend the fried chicken, which they don't have everyday. The rice is mixed with pickled radish.
