A Taste of Home in the Heart of Kakaako

Stepping into Shays Filipino Cafe feels less like dining out and more like walking into a family kitchen in the middle of Honolulu's most vibrant district. The air is thick with the savory, caramelized scent of garlic-fried rice and the sharp, tangy aroma of house-made vinegar, cutting through the tropical humidity of the neighborhood. It is a no-frills, counter-service spot that prioritizes hearty portions over polished aesthetic, making it a perfect retreat for locals looking for a quick, authentic lunch during a busy workday.

Signature Staples and Soul Food

The menu is a roadmap of classic Filipino comfort food. The chicken adobo is a standout, featuring meat that falls off the bone, braised deep into a dark, soy-vinegar reduction that demands to be soaked up with extra jasmine rice. Their pancit is generously portioned, loaded with crisp vegetables and savory bits that offer a satisfying crunch against the soft noodles. If you’re feeling adventurous, their selection of silog plates—typically served with a fried egg and garlic rice—remains the gold standard for breakfast-all-day cravings in the Kakaako area.

The Local Kakaako Character

This cafe captures the grit and energy of its surroundings. The seating is modest and the space can get quite loud during the lunch rush, as nearby workers crowd the room, but the efficiency of the kitchen keeps the line moving. Parking in this part of town can be a bit of a challenge, so come prepared to circle the block or walk a few minutes from nearby street parking. It’s the kind of place where the service is direct and the flavors are unapologetically bold, grounded in recipes that favor traditional seasoning over modern fusion gimmicks.

Aloha, We were in the area and was craving some tasty home cooked meals. We ordered the two rice plates with chicken adobo and lechon kawali, pork lumpia and halo halo. The rice plates included 2 scoops of rice, meat and fried banana. The adobo was tender, the portions were large. However, it lacked flavor. The lechon was on the dry side and it sat in a oily sauce. The pork lumpia wasn't fully cooked and the pork seemed like it was blended into a paste. Also, the halo halo didn't include alot of the usual fillings. It was mostly ice and ube ice cream. However, I really appreciate Shay's attempt to elevate the Filipino food scene. Our cuisine needs to have the recognition it deserves and the exposure to the rest of world.

First of all, I am glad that I found a Filipino eatery in the neighborhood of Kaka’ako. But at the same time, very disappointing on the food. Palabok taste bland. They overcooked the noodles. Monggos (lentil soup) is so salty. Seems like I am sipping a salt water. Chicken adobo is equally salty with the lentil soup. Customer service is pretty good. And the team working here are so friendly. My heart breaks. My ordered food at that time was murdered 3x. I can’t believe the awful experience I had with my favorite dish way back home. I still have faith on them. Will come back here maybe next year. And let’s see.

Great hearty portions of traditional Filipino food at reasonable prices. Although you order at the counter, you do receive table service when your meals are ready, so remember to leave a tip when you cash out after ordering. The food is served in very durable take out containers which I suggest you take home and reuse. This place has a great vibe with great food!
