They took our order..Didn't make it correctly...then told us they dont make it that way, after we already ordered and paid for it, then wanted to charge us for theyre mistake...The food was not that great...I guess if your a single person and hungry go for it but dont make this a family dinner night its not worth it at all. Took them 40 min to make 5 plates. Food was cold by the time we got home, and we live 3 min away...

We stopped in for lunch.We chose the restaurant side or you can get takeout from Okazuya side. We had Nitsuke Butterfish, Chicken Katsu, both came with Rice, Miso soup, Tsukemono, & green tea. Eggplant Tempura & Undagi, Shrimp Tempura, Sweet Potato Tempura. It was very good! The Butterfish was the star of the show! Soft, buttery, packed with flavorful. The service was excellent and welcoming. The atmosphere is old school with a beautiful garden in the back. Plenty of parking. We wanted to get the corn beef hash but forgot. We will be back for it. Definitely recommend and will definitely be back!

Had the butterfish. It was great. Wonderful, attentive service. Very friendly. Great place to meet with friends, have a delicious meal, & talk story.

Okazu only review: We actually planned to eat lunch there. When we walked in, we asked do we order here? (At the cashier/okazu line) Or do we sit? I think the server thought we wanted take-out food so she directly us to the line to pick food from the prepared food case. We wanted to eat at the premises so we asked whether we could sit at the large open table (vs. booths) and they said yes and even brought us ice water cups. However as more people entered I realized that we should have gotten seated and asked for menus. The prepared okazu offerings were tasty but on the salty side. Our favorite was the miso butterfish and green beans and pork. (5 stars). The nishime, maki sushi, chow fun, fried chicken, veggie tempura and andagi (3 stars). I remember when my grandparents would come here for lunch so I’m really glad to see that they are still in operation. Next time, I’ll try the fresh-cooked food.

Today I got to try the small saimin with deluxe burger, which is my first time with this combination, and it turned out to be good. I have found this combination to be a very good choice. This is a very vintage restaurant that has been around for a very long time and the locals are steadily coming to this place to make it a very busy place. The workers are very busy, but very helpful and friendly.

Local staple in kaimuki. My father used to eat here as a child. This restaurant has been here for a long long time...and in this location more than 50 years. I've been here multiple times throughout my life. It's as local as it gets... Friday for lunch...went to the delicatessen side. Got yakisoba, seaweed wrap, vegetable tempura, corn beef hash fried balls, and garlic chicken...for brought $16. Not bad of a price. Food was alright. Garlic chicken sauce was a bit salty, the vegetable tempura was overly fried. If you dine in, their saimin and bbq sticks are local classics. Service was friendly and helpful even though it was busy. Atmosphere of the dining area looks...original. Lol. Lastly...picture in photo is their latest take out menu for new year's day, 2025. They will open briefly on 01/01/2025 for last minute party orders.

A truly old-school Japanese-American diner in continuous operation since 1935 — a rare-find historic gem given so many mom-and-pops have closed in Hawaii since COVID. Booths filled with multi-generational clientele, all of whom have frequented this establishment since childhood. The menu bridges East Asia and America, with classics ranging from noodle soups and tonkatsu to hamburgers and milkshakes. Karai Saimin, cold egg noodles sauced in slightly spicy-sweet and topped with char-siu bbq pork is a savory treat. Fried Chicken, by the piece, fulfills a crunchy fix. Delicately Pan-Fried Butterfish, served with miso soup and rice, makes for a satisfying meal — complete. Deli counter for ready-made food to go, available at entry. Complimentary houjicha (green tea with toasted rice) served to in-house diners, in lieu of coffee, a plus. Very friendly waitress staff.

I heard this restaurant is one of the oldest ones in Oahu. Passing by this place very often, but no chance to visit. So we planned to dine! A few things I need to point out specifically. First of all, the chopstick! I haven’t seen the chopsticks bag with the restaurant’s name, address, and phone number for a long, long time! And in Japanese!! I can tell this restaurant stays open for a long time because they are loved by its customers. And second point is their macaroni potato salad. This is the best macaroni salad in this island for sure. The balance among mayo, macaroni, potato, and its flavor is perfect. This took me to my nostalgic memory very well. Third one is the marinated fried chicken! It is very crispy outside, and very juicy inside. AND they serve the chicken with grated daikon and ponzu sauce. It is really “home style” flavor, you are not getting tired of them. Service is really friendly, waiting time is short, price is very reasonable, and they have a plenty of parking space. Whenever I crave Japanese meals, this is the place from now on!

First time visit without any expectations despite of the negative reviews here in the recent months. They may need some updating to do in terms of interiors, but other than that the service was very good, reasonably priced menu. We had Mahi Tenpura & Chicken katsu set and Nabeyaki udon. Udon broth was bland, needed to have more Dashi to my liking but everyone has different palate. (Lived many years in Japan, I am just used to the taste in Japan. ) I would try their Okazu section next. All looked good!
