About
A Japanese Culinary Escape in Kaka'ako
Stepping into Sanshimai offers an immediate reprieve from the bustling energy of urban Honolulu. Located in the vibrant Kaka'ako district, this spot has built a reputation for its commitment to the art of the Japanese izakaya style. The atmosphere is unpretentious and stripped back, leaning into dark wood tones and minimalist lighting that keeps the focus entirely on what arrives at your table.
The Izakaya Experience
The menu leans heavily into fresh seafood and expertly prepared small plates designed for sharing. If you are a fan of sashimi, their offerings are consistently praised for freshness, often sourced directly from local waters. The signature flavor profiles here are subtle rather than overwhelming, allowing the natural quality of the fish to take center stage. You will often hear the rhythmic, sharp chopping from the open kitchen counter, a sound that signals your meal is being crafted in real-time.
What to Expect When Visiting
Sanshimai is the ideal destination for those who prefer an intimate dinner over the loud, chaotic bars found elsewhere in the city. It attracts a steady local crowd, particularly office professionals looking to unwind after a long day. Be prepared for a bit of a challenge when it comes to the neighborhood parking situation; Kaka'ako’s popularity means you might need to hunt for a stall in a nearby garage or walk a block or two. However, the trade-off is a quiet, sophisticated meal where you can actually hold a conversation without competing with blaring music. Whether you are craving a quiet bowl of miso soup or a full spread of nigiri, the kitchen maintains a strict, consistent standard that keeps the local regulars returning week after week.

Mama-Ya is a great downtown lunch spot with a huge menu, affordable prices, and service that is always great. The butterfish bento was rich, tender, savory, and satisfying, with multigrain rice, tamago, pickled ginger, and tasty sides that made the whole plate feel complete. I also like the Bishop Street arcade/courtyard setting, which makes it a nice place to sit and enjoy lunch. They have plenty of bentos, bowls, grab-and-go options, new mochi products, and a loyalty card program where every $100 spent gets you $10 off.

Literally grab and go. I was surprised at the quality of the food, you watch them make it fresh if they’re busy or running low. I’ve never order anything, just grab the bento box and then I enjoy it in the beautiful outdoor seating courtyard. Sometimes there is live music! Great lunch place.

Don't get deterred by the less than 4 stars reviews on Yelp coz this place could be a solid lunch spot for office workers! It's grab and go but I could tell the food was made fresh in the morning. Lots of variety from salads, soba noodles, sushi, poke, to hot food like salmon bento, shumai, buns, katsu bento, etc. you will find something you like here! The shop is small since it's a grab and go. During lunch time I saw a lot of people keep coming in, fortunately there wasn't a line when I went. The cashier was pretty efficient and still friendly, greeting people with aloha. The shop was also clean. No seating inside but there's plenty outside in the plaza. Best of all, the prices were so reasonable! I got a sushi combo with tuna inari, Korean kimbap, California maki roll, for only $5.99 plus tax. I split it into 2 meals so essentially I only spent $3 a meal! It's hard to find nowadays anywhere, let alone in Hawaii. I think this can be my regular lunch spot with the quality, price and the variety that they offer.
