San Nicolas Chicharon
About
Crunch and Heritage in Kalihi
Finding authentic, deep-fried perfection in Honolulu often leads locals straight to the heart of Kalihi. San Nicolas Chicharon has built a loyal following by mastering the art of the Filipino crackling. The scent of seasoned, bubbling oil greets you before you even hit the counter, a savory promise of the heavy, golden-brown pork rinds waiting inside.
The Filipino Crispy Standard
This spot is strictly for those who prioritize flavor over pretense. The chicharon is consistently crispy, offering that signature audible shatter when you take a bite. It is exactly what you want when craving a salty, protein-packed snack to pair with an ice-cold beverage. While the space is no-frills and parking in this industrial pocket of the city can occasionally test your patience, the trade-off is getting your hands on batches that are often served fresh out of the fryer.
Why Locals Keep Coming Back
Beyond the primary draw of their namesake chicharon, the menu leans into traditional Filipino staples that remind many diners of home-cooked meals. You won't find white-tablecloth service here; instead, you get straightforward, foil-wrapped goodness that captures the soul of island Filipino cuisine. If you are navigating the streets near the Kalihi thoroughfare and need a quick, reliable fix of something salty, crunchy, and undeniably satisfying, this is the destination.

Lechon here is legendary: extra crispy, crunchy skin; juicy pork. Pancit more akin to chicken chow mein — a happy surprise. Mini Plate, a nice accompaniment, one scoop rice with choice of 2 stews: kalabasa squash and stewed pork, amazing. Excellent place to grab food-on-the-go when heading to the beaches on the West Side.

I’m extremely disappointed with the empanada I purchased today… it was clearly old and tasted spoiled,,, the quality was unacceptable and completely inedible… I had no choice but to throw it away,,, total waste of money… this should never be served to customers,,, I expected much better in terms of freshness and food safety 😔

I remember the last time I purchased food from this establishment, the staff member preparing my order looked at me with visible disgust and placed only small portions on my bento tray. Moments later, her demeanor changed when she served the next customer, who was quite good-looking, and she generously filled his tray. I trust this was not intentional, but the contrast in service was certainly… memorable. I share this feedback in the hope that all customers are treated with fairness, professionalism, and consistency.
