Sam's Delicatessen
About
A No-Nonsense Slice of Old Honolulu
Stepping into Sam's Delicatessen feels like catching a moment of stillness in the middle of a busy workday in downtown Honolulu. This isn’t a place for white tablecloths or complex culinary experiments; it is a straightforward sandwich shop that prioritizes speed and substance over flash. The air inside carries the faint, comforting scent of cured meats and freshly sliced sourdough, a familiar fragrance that draws in the local office crowd during the midday rush.
The Deli Experience
The menu is anchored by classic, hearty deli staples. If you are looking for a quick lunch, the pastrami on rye is the primary draw, typically piled high with just enough mustard to clear your sinuses. The texture of the bread is consistent—crispy on the outside, soft within—making it a reliable staple for anyone craving a traditional deli-style meal in the heart of the city.
What to Expect
The space is functional and efficient, designed for people who have places to be. Because it serves such a high volume of local business professionals, the dining area can get quite noisy during peak lunch hours, with the constant clatter of trays and the hum of chatter echoing off the walls. Don't be surprised if the seating feels a bit snug; it is a popular spot, and you might find yourself sharing a view of the street with a stranger. It is best suited for a solitary quick bite or a casual, informal catch-up with a colleague. While the parking situation in this part of Honolulu can be a test of patience, the trade-off for a solid, no-frills sandwich is usually worth the hassle for those who appreciate old-school deli craftsmanship.

Today I got to try their Yook Gae Jang, Hot Beef Soup, and it turned out good. The worker, seemed like an owner, was very nice.

Super 'ono plates. Great comfort food vibes and fun to swap out sides and proteins however you feel! Favorite sides are the cucumber kimchi, bean sprouts, and sweet boiled potato :)

I'm all about supporting local, but the attitude and the my way or the highway does not deserve support. I'd rather support a lower quality international conglomerate then continue to help this place stay in business. Debating with them is pointless because they're just right. I phone ordered and told them I'd make my choices when I got there. I have done this multiple times. I also do not order rice with my plate since I prefer the veggies. I came in and said I didn't want rice and just veggies. She said she already put the rice in. I asked, can you just take it out? Nope. That 50 cent of rice is in there, you should have told me on the phone you didn't want rice. I've called in over a dozen times in the last year stating that I'll make my picks when I get there. I've had other issues with them but this took the cake for me. My plate is $20. You can't take the rice out and put something else? I'm not even asking for that really, I'm asking for consistency that they let me choose rice when I got there from before. I've been going here for over 15 years. Attitude does not deserve support. Thanks for all the rice that I will throw away.
