Sala Thai
About
A Taste of Bangkok in Makiki
Stepping into Sala Thai, you are immediately met with the fragrant aroma of lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves wafting from the kitchen. This neighborhood fixture in Makiki brings a no-frills, authentic approach to Thai cuisine that keeps locals returning for their consistent spice levels. The dining room feels like a modest family home, where the clinking of spoons against ceramic bowls provides a steady rhythm against the hum of a ceiling fan.
Signature Spice and Culinary Staples
The menu leans heavily into traditional recipes that don't shy away from heat. The Green Curry here is a standout, featuring a vibrant, coconut-milk-rich broth packed with tender bamboo shoots and basil. Their Pad Thai arrives with the classic balance of tamarind tang and crushed peanut crunch, though be prepared—if you ask for spicy, the kitchen takes your request seriously. Regulars often pair their entrees with a chilled Thai iced tea, which serves as a necessary, creamy counterpoint to the sharper chili notes found throughout the menu.
Know Before You Go
This spot is ideal for those who prioritize flavor over high-end aesthetics. It is a quiet, reliable choice for a weekday lunch or a casual dinner when you need comfort food without the fanfare. One minor logistical reality: street parking in this pocket of Honolulu can be elusive during peak evening hours, so give yourself a few extra minutes to navigate the surrounding blocks. Once you secure a table, however, the bustle of the city fades, replaced by the warmth of authentic spice and hospitality.

We found this restaurant completely by chance, and we didn't regret it for a second! The staff was very welcoming and took care of us very quickly. The food was delicious; I would say the only slight drawbacks were the wine (which wasn't to our taste at all, but we didn't have a choice) and the slightly bar-like atmosphere, but nothing that will stop us from coming back!

This place is an absolute gem. I am a thai basil and tom yum fan and this place did not disappoint! Perfect amount of spice and so much flavor. The mushrooms in the Tom yum were delicious and the prawns were good size. Thai Basil was out of this world! Will be back for sure! Mahalo.

Only came there for food(takeout). If you like a bar atmosphere with loud drunk/drinking men sitting around then this is your place. This is not a dinner sit down place. Staffwere very friendly, food came out quickly and was delicious.
