A Taste of Vietnam Amidst Honolulu’s Island Breeze

Stepping into Saigon Grill in the Kaimuki neighborhood feels like stumbling upon a quiet, flavor-packed secret tucked away from the frantic pace of Waikiki. The air here carries the warm, aromatic scent of star anise and charred aromatics, signaling that the pho broth has been simmering since long before the doors opened for the lunch rush.

Savoring the Classics

This spot is a destination for those who prioritize substance over flash. The signature beef pho is a centerpiece here, featuring a bone-marrow-rich broth that strikes a clean balance between savory and slightly sweet, paired with translucent, perfectly springy rice noodles. If you lean toward something more textured, their vermicelli bowls are piled high with grilled meats that possess that distinct, smoky char usually reserved for backyard barbecues. It is the kind of comfort food that makes the humid Honolulu afternoons feel a bit more manageable.

The Local Experience

The atmosphere is unpretentious and stripped back, leaning heavily into the utilitarian charm of a neighborhood eatery. It is ideal for a quick, soul-warming lunch with friends or a casual dinner when you need something reliable and deeply satisfying. Be prepared for the space to get lively—the acoustics are quite efficient, so you will definitely hear the clinking of spoons against ceramic bowls and the animated chatter of regulars. Parking in this part of town can be a bit of a dance, so give yourself an extra five minutes to navigate the nearby street spots. If you find yourself craving authentic Vietnamese spice without the tourist-heavy crowds, this Kaimuki outpost delivers a genuine slice of culinary heritage.

I had their prawns dish at the Saigon Grill Food truck. The food looked good and tasted okay. The salad and corn combo made little sense. And, the fact that the shell was in place the experience not so great (I understand that the option to keep or remove the shell is non standard --- this is just my preference). The service was very friendly.

Amazing Vietnamese food truck with an extensive menu! I came across this food truck the other night with a hankering for Pho. As I approached, I could see a huge photo collage of most of the dishes served. A very nice woman at the counter took my order, of which I went for the Oxtail Pho and a Pineapple Sugar Cane drink. After paying, I went to pick a table. Within 8 minutes the food arrived at the table and it smelled wonderful. First off, I’ve never had oxtail pho before… love oxtail, love pho, so perfect combo! The broth was delicious and the pho was fantastic! The only thing I’d say is that the portion was a bit small for Hawaiian and Vietnamese standards. As for the ambiance, it’s very casual with a street food scene vibe that I was digging! There’s ample parking as well. Next time I’d like to try the pork rice plate and the snails. If you’ve got a craving for Vietnamese food, this spot is worth trying!

Favourite place to go especially if you’re visiting Hawaii. The staff is very kind, I have very high standards for Vietnamese food being Vietnamese myself and they really outdid it. If you’re craving pho, this place is super cool, outdoor patio (late night vibes) - food is phenomenal 11/10 :) Highly recommend the banh canh. We also tried bun bo hue, oc, and bun mang vit, all super delicious and consistent!
