L&L Hawaiian Barbecue - Honolulu (Kalākaua Ave)
About
A Local Staple in the Heart of Waikiki
When the sun-drenched beaches of Honolulu leave you craving a hearty, no-frills meal, this spot serves as a reliable anchor for authentic Hawaiian comfort food. Famous for defining the classic plate lunch, the menu centers around generous portions of comfort staples. Expect the familiar aroma of smoky barbecue meats and tangy teriyaki sauce wafting toward the sidewalk as you decide between the signature Chicken Katsu or the classic Loco Moco.
The Classic Island Experience
Dining here is refreshingly straightforward. The atmosphere captures the casual energy of a busy surf town, where patrons shuffle in wearing flip-flops, sand still clinging to their feet. It is the perfect stop for those who prefer function over fancy decor; you are coming for the quintessential two-scoops of rice and macaroni salad that make local cuisine so iconic. While the interior seating is modest and the nearby street parking can be a challenge during peak lunch hours, the quick turnover ensures you won't wait long to tuck into your meal.
Why Choose This Waikiki Corner
This establishment is best for travelers who want to bypass the high-end resort prices for an honest, filling taste of Hawaii. Whether you are grabbing a quick box to eat on the beach or stopping by for a post-surf refuel, the consistency of their grilled proteins keeps locals coming back. It’s an essential stop for anyone wanting to experience the grab-and-go culture that fuels the O'ahu lifestyle.

The food was great! The service was good, a bit slower than I anticipated but I was thankful for fresh delicious food. The restaurant is in a food court and finding tables were busy but we found one. We needed to clean it.

I ordered beef from this L&L location and was very disappointed to find that it was undercooked/raw. This is a serious food safety concern and needs to be addressed immediately. Serving raw beef when it’s supposed to be fully cooked poses a health risk to customers. I hope management takes this seriously and ensures the kitchen staff are properly checking food temperatures before serving. I asked the front desk lady to heat up the meat and she told me in America that beef is supposed to be this rare. Edit: the steak was blue, i feel like it was still moving. The front desk lady had the audacity to tell me it’s cooked. This place needs to be audited by the health department for serving raw meat.

Ordered the Teriyaki Beef Bowl. The food was decent for the price but definitely not the best in Hawaii.

I came here on Monday afternoon and ordered a combo plate. Food portion big enough to share with 2, the garlic shrimp and kalbi are delicious. The server in front is very efficient and will provide whatever you need. It’s a good choice when you pass by.

The large Katsu are delicious and you can easily share or have left overs for your next meal! You can also replace 1 scoop mac with 1 scoop rice at no extra cost! Best deal in town😉 It is located at the Royal Hawaiian Center food court.

It was time to get another fix of Hawaiian comfort food so we hit up L&L BBQ in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center food court. We can’t hang with the full size plate so we both ordered minis, I had Loco Moco and my son had BBQ chicken. They were still huge portions and piping hot. It was a nice food court and the staff was friendly and efficient. L&L BBQ is a favorite of mine so we definitely recommend it if you like or want to try Hawaiian Comfort food..🤙🏽

It's in a food court. Food is pretty good. Portions are large - the "Mini " is actually enough for two people. Had the bbq beef with Mac salad and rice . A little pricey, but it's Hawaii - food is crazy expensive!

Here on vacation and have been craving a good loco moco for days. Finally said I’ll just get it from L&L. It was amazing. Well seasoned burger patty, savory gravy, two eggs perfectly sunny side up, with two scoops Mac salad and one scoop rice. It was a wonder. Husband had the shrimp and steak. Not exaggerating. Their shrimp gives all the famous shrimp trucks a run for their money. One of the best shrimps we’ve had yet. Highly recommend this place ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Had chicken katsu and it was a large portion for a reasonable price. Located in the food court the ambiance as expected. The BBQ sauce was sweet and not hot. Overall a pleasant experience.

We stopped here for lunch, and I found it underwhelming. The service was okay but the food was not very good. My wifes barbecue burger was so bad she took 2 bites and then threw it away. Also, when they gave us our food, they just tossed it on the top of the display and said, "Here."
