A Slice of Old-School Chinatown Charm

Stepping into Royal Palace Restaurant, you are immediately greeted by the hum of Cantonese chatter and the clinking of porcelain teacups. Located in the heart of Honolulu’s historic Chinatown district, this establishment captures the essence of traditional Dim Sum dining without the frills of modern aesthetics. The dining room is expansive, featuring classic circular tables that encourage large family gatherings and local social clubs to linger over long lunches.

Dim Sum Traditions in the Pacific

The kitchen leans heavily into classic Cantonese staples. Their har gow and chicken feet are locally recognized for their consistency, often arriving at the table on traditional steaming carts pushed by seasoned staff who have been a fixture in the neighborhood for years. The scent of ginger, scallion, and jasmine tea permeates the air, creating an authentic sensory backdrop that feels like a quick trip to Hong Kong rather than a lunch break in downtown Honolulu.

Know Before You Go

While the food is a staple for local residents, visitors should be prepared for the bustling, high-energy environment. It can get quite loud during the weekend rush, and finding street parking nearby requires a bit of patience given the density of the surrounding area. It is the kind of place where service is efficient rather than doting, perfectly suited for those who value authentic flavors and a no-nonsense culinary experience. If you find yourself wandering through the colorful, historic streets of Honolulu’s downtown, this spot serves as a reliable anchor for a hearty, traditional meal.

Fresh, delicious, and affordable! We came for the buffet but found out it’s only available at lunch, so we ordered walnut shrimp, deep-fried tofu with vegetables, house special fried rice, and Singapore rice noodles instead. The staff were kind enough to customize the noodles for my mother, who is vegetarian. We’re impressed by the authentic flavors, generous portions, and overall quality. Highly recommend this place—and many thanks to the wonderful staff!

Don’t let the their picture fool you. The trays are always empty and they really don’t have a huge selection. Been here 15 mins and the food trays still empty I got full on rice The price does not match the food.

Absolutely terrible experience. From the moment we walked through the door, the smell of cat urine should have made us turn around and head back out. For the $15.95 weekend buffet price it is not at all worth it. We got there just as they were setting out for dinner and there wasn't many options to choose from. We were told they would bring more out and over the next 45 minutes they brought out maybe 4 different things. All the food tasted old and they had none of the traditional items you would expect to find at a Chinese buffet. There "fresh" fruit was not at all fresh and looked like it had been sitting out for a while. I steered clear of that and stuck with the canned fruit instead. This was the cheaper of the options available for Chinese buffets but it was still way to overpriced for what you get. The restaurant itself is run down and the floors, tables, and even the kitchen looked filthy. The only good thing I can say about my experience was that the employees were nice but the service was almost nonexistent and the food absolutely gross. If you were hoping to get some ice cream, don't hold your breath because the machine is out of order.
