Robata JINYA - Honolulu
About
Fireside Flavors in the Heart of Waikiki
Stepping into Robata JINYA in Honolulu feels like sliding into a Tokyo backstreet after dark. The space is anchored by the rhythmic sizzle of the robata grill, where binchotan charcoal creates the signature smoky char on skewers of chicken thigh, wagyu beef, and fresh seasonal vegetables. The air carries a heavy, savory aroma of caramelizing soy and rendered fat, a scent that signals high-heat Japanese cooking done with precision.
The Izakaya Ritual
This isn't a place for a hurried meal; it is built for the slow accumulation of plates. Small dishes arrive continuously—crispy takoyaki, buttery edamame, and sashimi that tastes of the Pacific. The atmosphere is energized by a mix of clinking glasses and the upbeat, steady hum of conversation that fills the dining room. It’s an ideal spot for a post-beach dinner or a late-night gathering where the primary goal is sharing good food and cold Sapporo.
A Local Note
While the menu is expansive and meticulously prepared, keep in mind that the lively acoustics can make it a bit loud during peak evening hours—perfect if you want a vibrant social backdrop, though perhaps less suited for a quiet, intimate whisper. The staff moves with a practiced efficiency, managing the heat of the grill and the flow of the dining room with ease. If you find yourself wandering near the Ala Moana corridor or finishing a day along the Waikiki shoreline, the charcoal embers here offer an authentic, smoky alternative to standard island fare.

I ordered the Pork Katsu Curry Don and thoroughly enjoyed every bite. The crispy breaded pork cutlet was perfectly cooked, with a crunchy exterior and tender, juicy meat inside. It was topped with a rich and flavorful Japanese curry sauce that paired wonderfully with the soft, freshly steamed rice. The combination of textures and flavors made the dish incredibly satisfying and memorable.

Delicious Japanese style Ramen noodles. I chose to have the kimchi Ramen… It was divinely unami! I absolutely adored all the original artwork and asked the waitress Sherry?(who was extremely competent) who the artist was. Apparently, it was Josephine Tanaka... a supremely talented family member 🥹 Who doesn't love a family owned business that serves the food they love to share with their own Ohana?

Best ramen I have ever had in my life. Got the volcano lava Tanaka, a side of sausages and Japanese beer. Delicious! The broth was fantastic, the noodles flavorful, and the beer crisp and refreshing.
