About
A Bold Taste of Mexico in Kakaʻako
Stepping into Rico Rico is like finding a vibrant, hidden portal to Mexico right in the center of Honolulu. The air is thick with the aroma of slow-roasted meats and charred corn tortillas, while the upbeat tempo of Latin music bounces off the colorful murals adorning the walls. It is a loud, energetic space where the clatter of plates and the hiss of the griddle create a rhythmic backdrop for an authentic street-food experience.
Signature Bites and Local Favorites
Chef-driven and unpretentious, the menu focuses on the integrity of the ingredients. The standout here is undoubtedly the al pastor, carved directly from the trompo with pineapple that brings a necessary acidic sweetness to the savory pork. Their carne asada tacos carry a deep, smoky char that speaks to high-heat grilling, best paired with a generous squeeze of fresh lime and their house-made salsas. For those looking for a plant-based option, the roasted vegetable variations are surprisingly robust, avoiding the common pitfalls of bland vegetarian fillings.
Why This Spot Fits Your Schedule
This is the ideal haunt for a casual lunch after exploring the art galleries nearby or a high-energy dinner before a night out in the city. Keep in mind that seating can feel a bit snug during the dinner rush, and the parking lot nearby is frequently packed; it is the kind of place where you might find yourself sharing a long communal table with locals. Despite the occasional squeeze, the efficiency of the kitchen ensures your food arrives hot and fast, making it a reliable staple for anyone craving genuine Mexican soul food in Hawaii.

I finally tried Rico Rico Peruvian Rotisserie Chicken and WOW — this is exactly what I’ve been searching for! The chicken is unbelievably flavorful — perfectly seasoned, incredibly juicy, and roasted to that mouthwatering golden perfection. Every bite is packed with bold, savory goodness that keeps you going back for more. You know that feeling when you taste something and instantly think, “Yes… THIS is it”? That was me from the first bite. If you love real flavor, tender rotisserie chicken, and food that actually satisfies the craving you didn’t even realize you had — this place absolutely delivers. Hands down some of the best chicken I’ve had in a long time. I’m already looking forward to my next visit!

Such an unassuming truck I almost missed it! Only options available were half and whole, no quarter. Delicious huli huli chicken with a Peruvian twist. The chicken was charred to smoky perfection while still remained tender and juicy. The Peruvian twist were the strikingly umami, peppery, and herbaceous flavors infused in the chicken. The mustard sauce was a great addition to balance the dish's intensity with some creaminess.

Mannnn! I can't tell everyone enough how delicious their chicken. I have eaten here well before Covid started. The meat is so tender and moist! The flavor is just so well balanced with the right saltiness and aroma from the herbs. The sauce is pretty good as well. The sauce is buttery and has a little kick like mustard but not spicy at all. Worth every penny! Get the whole chicken so you can save for later or share with family or friends. Recommend you place an order beforehand because it sells out quick. The owner wants to make sure everything is fresh and tasty so order through the phone.
