About
Innovation Between Rice Patties
In the heart of Honolulu, Rice Burger & Cafe challenges the traditional sandwich concept by replacing classic wheat buns with crispy, golden-seared rice patties. This local favorite captures the soul of island comfort food, offering a handheld experience that holds up surprisingly well against savory fillings. The menu draws heavy influence from Japanese culinary traditions, resulting in flavor profiles that feel both nostalgic and inventive.
The Sensory Experience
Step inside and you are immediately hit with the aroma of toasted soy sauce and sizzling meat. The interior maintains a casual, no-frills aesthetic that puts the focus entirely on the plate. Expect a rhythmic clatter from the kitchen as the chefs press the rice into perfect, compact shapes, creating that essential crunch on the exterior that yields to a chewy, satisfying center. The space tends to fill up quickly during the lunch rush, so you might find yourself shoulder-to-shoulder with local students and office workers grabbing a quick bite.
What to Order
While the menu is vast, the signature rice burgers—featuring classic beef, teriyaki chicken, and even seafood options—remain the primary draw. The balance of textures is the real highlight here; the starchy, slightly sticky rice complements the marinated proteins, which are often finished with a drizzle of spicy mayo or a house-made sauce that adds a necessary zing. It is an ideal spot for those looking for a quick, filling, and distinctively local lunch in Honolulu that avoids the pretension of more upscale dining.
A Note for First-Timers
Parking in the surrounding blocks can be a bit of a puzzle, so keep an eye out for small lots or street spots if you are driving. It is the kind of place where you order at the counter, find a seat, and wait for your number to be called. Come ready to get a little messy—the rice patties are sturdy, but they are designed to be enjoyed with both hands.

They finally opened! I got here for dinner and half the menu was sold out. Not bad for their third day being open! I got the kimchi bugolgi and spam rice burgers. They were good and affordable. I liked the flavor, but it is a lot of rice lol. The kimchi bugolgi flavor was my favorite. I think one rice burger is enough for most people. Next time I want to try the bibimbap, kimbap, and tteokbokki.
