A Taste of Tokyo in the Heart of Honolulu

When you step into Ramen Ono-Ya, the first thing that hits you is the rich, savory scent of long-simmered pork bone broth. This local favorite serves as a no-frills sanctuary for those craving authentic Japanese comfort food amidst the bustle of Oahu. The kitchen focuses on traditional technique, turning out steaming bowls of tonkotsu ramen that balance creamy, opaque depth with the sharp bite of fresh green onions and marinated bamboo shoots.

Slurping Near the Island Pulse

Located conveniently for locals and visitors exploring the urban landscape of Honolulu, the shop captures the energetic, fast-paced nature of a classic ramen-ya. The seating is intimate, often creating a lively hum of conversation that mixes with the rhythmic clatter of ladles against ceramic bowls. It is the kind of spot where you might find yourself elbow-to-elbow with a stranger, united by the shared mission of finishing a bowl while the noodles are still perfectly al dente.

What to Expect

Beyond the signature pork broth, the menu features a variety of toppings that allow for a custom experience. While the dining room can get quite cozy during the lunch rush—making it a better fit for quick solo meals or pairs rather than large parties—the efficiency of the service ensures that the wait is rarely long. Keep in mind that finding a parking spot in this high-traffic sector of the city requires a bit of patience, but the arrival of a piping hot bowl of noodles makes the hunt well worth the effort.

The great thing about this place is you can add your name to the waitlist on Yelp. I didn’t really need to do it this time, as when I came, we got a table right away, didn’t even need to check in. The restaurant isn’t very loud for how many people are there, which is great. Service is also quick, I ordered the Shoyu ramen and Katsu curry combo, and my partner ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen. It took less than 5 minutes for both our food to come out. My partner said that her ramen was good and that it’ll be a place we’ll come back, which is a great sign from her. Next time I will try something else though. I liked the katsu curry, but the shoyu ramen was just “OK” to me, I’m more used to the broth being a little more umami. But overall it’s a good place, will come back again .

Food is excellent and the vegan options are great! Tiny friendly thought though. You guys have the potential to be one of the top spots in town. A little refresh of the walls and paint would honestly transform the vibe. Right now the interior feels a bit tired and it hides how good the place actually is. With a small facelift this place would absolutely shine

**Rating: 4.5/5** **Food:** 5/5 **Ambiance:** 4/5 **Service:** 4/5 We stopped by Onoya Ramen after hiking Diamond Head--and we were *super* hungry, lol. I was craving chicken katsu curry, while my husband and daughter went for ramen. I can confidently say this is the **best ramen I've had so far in the US**. I actually ended up eating more ramen than my own curry. Even though we ordered the spicy version, my 8-year-old loved it. She said it was spicy and needed water--but still kept saying how *really, really good* it was. The chicken katsu curry was pretty good, but it tasted more Indian-inspired than Japanese to me. I could pick up hints of Indian spices and coconut, and it reminded me a lot of how curry is made in my hometown. While it was flavorful, I was expecting more traditional Japanese curry flavors with potatoes and carrots, which were missing. Overall, a great post-hike stop with amazing ramen. We'd definitely come back--especially for the ramen!
