Rainbow Drive-In (1339 North School Street)
About
A Slice of History on Kanewai Field
Stepping up to the counter at this Kapahulu-adjacent icon feels like time travel. Since opening its doors in 1961, the establishment has defined the quintessential Honolulu plate lunch experience. You will hear the rhythmic clatter of plastic trays and the lively chatter of locals grabbing a quick bite before heading to the beach. The air carries the distinct, sweet-savory scent of grilled teriyaki beef mingling with the rich, salty aroma of brown gravy.
What to Order
The Mix Plate is the undisputed champion here, offering a generous portion of boneless chicken, mahi-mahi, and BBQ beef. Don't overlook the chili rice or the legendary Loco Moco, which remains a benchmark for local comfort food. The portions are substantial, designed to fuel a long afternoon in the Pacific sun.
The Local Pulse
Expect a bustling scene. During the lunch rush, the line snakes out toward the parking lot, and finding an open picnic table requires a bit of tactical patience. It is unpretentious, loud, and quintessentially O'ahu. You are not coming here for white-tablecloth service; you are here for the culinary heritage that has fed generations of Honolulu families. While the parking lot can get cramped and maneuvers require a bit of focus, the reward of a classic gravy-smothered meal makes the tight squeeze worth every second. It remains a must-visit for anyone looking to eat like a true islander in the heart of Hawaii.

No cash accepted! A good burger joint. I tried their Rainbow Royal burger. It was a good burger and their tater tots were good. Seems like the locals all got the plate meals which I'll have to try next time. The burger was a double cheeseburger but not too big. It filled my craving for a burger. I definitely enjoyed the tots. They were hot right off the fryer. Parking was a bit limited. They have some in the back of the store but it's shared, you'll have to find street parking near by. All in all, I'll have to come back and try something else from the menu. The cheeseburger and tots were good and you can't go wrong with them. I would have gotten the breakfast but I just missed the cut off time of 1030

I got the shoyu chicken plate for $9.50 and it was good and it was a lot. This was definitely a cheap eats. I ate about half and saved the other half for dinner. The whole plate must have been about 2 pounds for more. The server was friendly and helpful so that made everything better.

Was recommended to us by our lyft driver. Food came out hot and fresh. About the same price as everything else on this island. Could have used maybe a little bit hot sauce, that might just be my preference. The macaroni salad is amazing next time I just eat a couple of cups of that 😁. The dinner portions are very large. Between mounds of white rice and macaroni salad I don't know why anyone would be hungry.
