Hand-Rolled Dough in the Heart of Kahala
Stepping into the lower level of Kahala Mall, the unmistakable, buttery aroma of toasted salt and rising yeast acts as a magnetic pull. For locals navigating the busy corridors near Waialae Avenue, this stop offers a quick, reliable escape from the midday Honolulu heat. Unlike the sterile pace of typical mall food courts, this spot maintains a hum of activity, perfect for grabbing a snack before catching a movie or heading home after a shopping trip.
The Art of the Twist
The menu centers on precision. Each pretzel is hand-rolled and baked until the exterior achieves a deep, golden mahogany shade while the center remains pull-apart soft. While the classic salted variety remains the definitive choice for purists, the garlic-parmesan option carries a pungent, savory punch that tends to linger on the palate. If you prefer a dip, their signature sweet glaze provides a sharp contrast to the salt, though be prepared for a slightly sticky mess if you are eating on the go.
A Local Pitstop
The space is functional, built for efficiency rather than lingering. Be mindful that during the late afternoon school rush, the area can get quite crowded, and finding a clear spot to stand while waiting for your order is part of the territory. It is the definition of a grab-and-go experience—unpretentious, consistently hot, and tailored for those who appreciate the simple satisfaction of a well-made, warm dough treat while exploring East Honolulu.

Second-to-none: That is how I would describe Pretzelmaker’s signature parmesan pretzels. The delight of butter, pretzel, and hit of salt/parmesan can’t be matched with any other pretzel chain. The price can be steep for a snack, but they still honor their buy-3-get-1-free offer that has been around for 20 years.

Been going to pretzelmaker since they had a location in Pearlridge in the 90s. But oh man, the young man working at 4pm on Sunday August 24, 2025 was so unpleasant and rude that I don’t want to ever return and give my hard earned money to this brat. Huffing while taking the order incorrectly and then proceeding to slam the pretzels down at the counter with a stink eye. I think said thank you and smiled more than the person that’s supposed to be showing the actual customer service. Jeez! Whoever management is at this pretzelmaker location in Kahala, please have a talk with this young man to correct his attitude.
