Pongo's Kitchen
About
Island Flavors in the Heart of Honolulu
Stepping into Pongo's Kitchen feels like uncovering one of Honolulu’s best-kept secrets. Tucked away from the polished Waikiki tourist track, this spot leans into the authentic, laid-back energy that defines local dining. The space is modest, prioritizing quick service and bold tastes over elaborate decor, making it a go-to for residents grabbing a hearty lunch during a busy workday.
The Menu: A Local Staple
The kitchen excels at the quintessential Hawaiian plate lunch. Expect generous portions where the steam rising from the white rice carries the savory scent of house-made gravies and slow-cooked proteins. Their menu draws heavily from the diverse culinary history of the islands, featuring rotating daily specials that showcase locally sourced ingredients. Whether you are craving a traditional loco moco or a crisp, fresh salad, the cooking here feels honest and unpretentious.
What to Expect
The atmosphere is bustling and casual; it is the kind of place where the sound of the screen door hitting the frame and the chatter of regulars create a rhythmic background noise. Keep in mind that seating is limited and parking in this part of Honolulu can require a bit of patience, so many regulars prefer to call ahead for takeout. It is the ideal stop for anyone looking to fuel up before a surf session or wanting a low-key, flavor-packed meal that avoids the fanfare of expensive dining rooms.

Sesame chicken full meal was very good. I like more than korean fried chicken (BHC) since you taste chicken more than seasoning. Both good in their own way. Food was ready very fast. Parking a bit hard to find.

Reasonable prices. Kalua pork bowl and spicy guava chicken were cooked perfectly!

They have a good selection of dishes that are on the menu along with daily specials average cost. Also have a few dessert items including butter mochi, banana bread. Everything was prepared perfectly, everything is solid at a reasonable prices. Staff are nice. 4 STARS for the bad parking and a challenge, there is NONE! Calling ahead to place orders is the way to go. I parked in the business next door ran in paid, and grabbed food and was out of there.
