A Bowl of Tradition in the Heart of Honolulu

Walking into Pho Que Huong, the immediate scent of star anise and slow-simmered beef bones signals that you have arrived at a local staple for authentic Vietnamese soul food. Far from the polished, tourist-heavy eateries of Waikiki, this spot serves no-nonsense, deeply flavorful broth that keeps Honolulu locals coming back on repeat.

The Broth That Defines a Neighborhood

The kitchen here focuses on the essentials. Their signature pho is characterized by a clear, aromatic stock that strikes a perfect balance between savory and slightly sweet. Whether you opt for the classic rare beef pho or the brisket version, the herbs—bright Thai basil, sawtooth cilantro, and fresh lime—are always served crisp and generous. It is the kind of place where the steaming ceramic bowls act as a shield against a humid afternoon, providing a quick, restorative meal.

Dining Expectations

The atmosphere is bustling and unpretentious, with a functional layout that prioritizes high turnover during the lunch rush. It is best suited for solo diners or friends looking for a casual, reliable lunch in the city. You might notice the service moves with a rapid-fire efficiency that leaves little room for hesitation, and while the parking lot can get tight during peak hours, the trade-off is consistently high-quality cooking that stays true to traditional Vietnamese roots. If you are craving a hearty, no-frills meal that hits every sensory mark of a traditional pho shop, this is the destination.

Delicious food and very authentic. We tried the Bun Bo Hue and the Bun Xiao both were delicious. The Bun Xiao was bigger than what was pictured and came with tons of fresh greens on the side (although the portion was so big we had to ordered extra greens). We walked, so parking wasn't an issue but parking is always somewhat of an issue in Chinatown. The Bun Bo Hue has pork hock and pork blood, tons of meats, tendons and lots of greens as well! My second visit here was even better than the first! Service was excellent 👌

The menu features many delicious dishes, with Pho and Bu’n being my personal favorites. Don't forget to try the yogurt, flan, and fresh sugarcane juice—they are the perfect way to finish off your meal. It is well worth a visit if you are looking for genuine Vietnamese flavors.

We came here on a Saturday night close to 7pm, on a whim. Basically found street parking and it was one of the first restaurants we saw. Even though we went up and down a couple of streets, we headed back to this one as it was packed so we knew it must be good. Looking around at other tables, everyone seemed very pleased with their meal and are very generous in portions. The lotus salad had just the right amount of tang and was full of lotus. I was pleasantly surprised and would definitely order it again. The vegetarian spring rolls were cooked to perfection and they gave you a generous amount of garnishes. No soggy middle! I ordered the vegetarian phõ and that also was generous in size despite my poor picture taking. I only ate half and took the rest home. The broth is very light so I did have to add some condiments that were on the table. However they are very generous with the different types of vegetables that they put in there which I was also surprised with. The Mr. had an XL combo phõ and barely finished it. It was such an abundance. I didn't eat the chicken wings since I'm pescatarian but I was told they were good. We took a decent amount of leftovers home for the kid. I would definitely come back here again but would need to share my entrée as they do give generous portions. It's no wonder there were many tables that were generational as you can easily share dishes.
